We LOVED the look of the Castle but there were things we did not love. If you want to arrive more than an hour early you are charged $400 per hour.. If you do not pay and you come early anyway you are charged $500.... not sure why because there are always games going on and tons of people walking around. You basically cannot get out of giving them extra money because the bride has to be hiding 30 min before the wedding and if you want to do pictures you need more than 30 min. Another thing was the rule of no sound outside from speakers... not sure how anyone would hear the ceremony... we had it inside because of rain but I think outside while beautiful would have been hard to hear. When we got to the venue the toilets were not working there was no water and the whole night the toilets were red with rust... we had to fight to get our $400 back that we paid to come early... disaster...Imagine having a party for 125 and no water... they were quick to fix it but the red did not go away and Maryvale at no point wanted to reimburse me for this issue. It was after phone calls from my mom that we received $400 back. For the price of $3,500 you only get 4 hours with an hour to come early and and hour after for catering to clean up. You buy more time 30min = $200. BUT you cannot buy time earlier until 30 days before the wedding so we were designing the invitations not knowing when it was going to start. Maryvale tries to have two events every Saturday one at 1 and one at 6 in the castle. 6-10 is not really long enough so we changed it to 4:30-10 and paid $600 with the bar having to close at 9:30 another Maryvale rule the bar has to close 30min prior to the event ending... unless you guessed it you buy more time....I know $4,000 or $5,000 when you look at other venues in Baltimore is no big deal but the stress of committing to Maryvale and then not knowing if we could start at 4:30 like we wanted until 30 days prior is stressful. We had a 6:00 start until we changed to 4:30. Go into with your eyes open. We really did love the venue just be aware of the agreement you are signing. Also people cannot leave their cars there the gate is locked the next day.
The castle is beautiful, stunning, and remarkably competitive in terms of price with most venues in Baltimore County Maryland. For my wife and I, cost and capacity were the two prominent factors driving our decision on where we would host our wedding. Ultimately, we chose the castle because of its historic beauty and its affordable pricing. Maria, the castle’s wedding coordinator, will assist you with any questions you may have. She’s fairly good at replying to emails and voice mails so when questions arise, don’t be afraid to give her a call. Our wedding was hosted on a Sunday at the castle (you save money that way FYI as opposed to having your wedding on a Saturday) and the castle effectively held all 153 guests that attended the wedding. Keep in mind the weather outside was gorgeous and thus, most guests could wonder around outside if they desired. Other things to consider: The castle only allows certain caterers to serve there (they’ll provide you with a list of 5 vendors they allow) and the contract is incredibly strict. You are not allowed to have amplified music outside of the castle. This makes it difficult to have an outside ceremony if you were hopping a band or DJ could play the processional & recessional outside for you – forget it. We decided to hire a pianist (the castle provides a piano) and she played the processional/recessional for our outside ceremony. Overall, the Castle at Maryvale was a great venue with exquisite beauty that you’ll rarely find in the state of Maryland. Besides, who wouldn’t want to get married at a castle?
When my husband and I first started looking for a wedding venue, we wanted something unique. We looked everywhere from art galleries to modern ballrooms to historic manors. We kept facing disappointment because none of these came close to what we truly wanted for our wedding. One day, after we finished a tour with another venue that we were looking at, we sat down and felt discouraged. As we contemplated what to do, I randomly did a Google search (I forgot what I had typed) but it led us to the Castle at Maryvale! We were thrilled at the idea of a castle and called them immediately. Maria told us to come over and gave us a wonderful tour of the place. After hearing about an open house discount, we were hooked.
The castle was definitely special and fitting to our relationship. My husband's name actually means 'prince', I always felt that he treated me like a queen, and we both had a worrisome fascination with The Royal Couple: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton).
Our wedding was absolutely beautiful. Guests kept telling us how stunning the venue was. The pictures are gorgeous. Who else gets to say that they got married in a castle?
Yes, Maria can get very bossy at times and she is very talkative but I know that's only because she cares a lot and she's very knowledgable with event coordination, having done this for years. She answered every question that I had very sufficiently. I can tell she is very passionate about what she does. The castle does have a lot of rules and regulations, since it is a historic venue, but none of it affected our wedding. Actually, I did really want sparklers and flower petals. But they're not allowed. That's okay.
My only complaint: Our wedding was on a Saturday from 2pm - 6pm. We were told that there wouldn't be any other weddings after ours. Our photographer had planned to take a series of pictures for us after the wedding. However, on the day of the wedding, we were immediately kicked off the premises and told that we had to leave because they had another event that night. It was totally unexpected and I wish the staff had communicated that to us in advance. Our guests were rushed out and my photographer was very upset about the whole situation.
Overall, we would definitely recommend the castle to any couple looking for a unique, historic venue in the Baltimore area that will truly make them stand out!
We had our wedding at the Castle at Maryvale in June. The castle provided a gorgeous setting for our special day. One nice thing about the castle is that you don't really have to decorate if you don't want to or can't afford it because it already has so much character and beauty on its own. The staff was great and we got so many compliments from our guests on how unique and beautiful the castle was. I highly recommend the Castle at Maryvale to any bride looking for a stunning venue!
Having my wedding at the castle was the perfect fairytale come true. The location was beautiful, the guests had a wonderful time and the staff was amazing to work with. We could not be any happier with the event.
We had our dream wedding at Maryvale in September 2012. We were married Catholic, so we had our ceremony in the chapel. We had about 100 guests and everybody was seated comfortably and everybody could hear and see clearly. We had rain, so our seating plan changed but it was still easy to get around and see everybody during dinner. The venue is so beautiful which cuts costs on decorations. We only decorated the mantel with candles and foliage but even this isn't needed since it is so nice. The bridal suite is wonderful to gather and collect your thoughts before the long walk to the alter. Since the great hall becomes the dance floor, everybody had room to dance which was packed especially during our 'participation dances'. Maria, who schedules the bookings is very helpful and so pleasant to work with. We worked with her to make several trips to the castle so we could plan while we were in the space. I would recommend Maryvale to anybody. We were able to go inside to get away from the rain and go outside to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings. The castle has a cozy feel despite being so large and is just a gorgeous venue.
I had a Fall wedding in October at the Castle at Maryvale. I am so in love with this place. It was like a fairytale wedding. Our reception was outside on a perfect fall day. My guests were blown away by it being a castle and how gorgeous it is both inside and outside. There are some strange rules regarding things you can't do, but you can work around them. It is a stunning venue and I sad that I dont have a reason to visit it anymore.
We had an amazing time at the castle and would recommend it to anyone. Our guests are still talking about this beautiful location!
Maryvale Castle is absolutely stunning inside and out. When I went in to tour the castle for a bridal show, I fell in love and could not leave without booking. The only downside is that you can only choose between two caterers which ends up being a little costly because one is amazing and the other is not so great. They also have some strict policies, so make sure to read the contract before booking. One policy that didnt seem to be a big deal at first was no outdoor music..which is fine but that includes any speakers or sound what so ever. That isnt the best scenario when you have all of your guests wrapped around the porch for dinner and want to do toasts outside, but it did work out fine. The caterer and dj did a great job of coordinating to make it work. Overall I would not have wanted my wedding anywhere else. It was a true fairytale.
