A dream come true!    posted 10/1/2013

The Franklin Room was a dream to work with throughout our planning process. My parents had their reception there 30 years ago, and it was such a great experience to be able to have mine there as well! Michele was quick to respond, flexible, and so helpful. Plus, the results we got for the price were just incomparable. The space looked magical the night of our reception, and everyone had an incredible time. The food was great and so easy, and Michele made everything happen just the way my husband and I imagined it. She went out and got us Gus's Pretzels to have as a late-night snack, worked well with our vendors, and gave us plenty of time to set up beforehand and break down afterwards. All the while she was so friendly and low-stress it made the planning process that much smoother. I would not change anything about our reception for the world. Also, the mini reubens are delicious!!!

Gorgeous Venue, Delicious Food, GREAT People!    posted 8/28/2013

I had always dreamed of having my wedding reception in a place with a real hardwood floor. I never knew that such a place existed right in my own neighborhood! The Franklin Room was the first place we visited, and Michele was so nice, the place was so beautiful, and the value for what they offer is superb! I'm not sure why we went on to view other venues, but we came back to the Franklin Room, and booked them ASAP! They were already booked for the wedding date we wanted, but we wanted our reception at The Franklin Room more than that date, so we picked the next available weekend! The place is gorgeous; it does not require much decorating to look phenomenal - which is great for someone like me who had a small budget and no decorating chops. Michele had vases on hand for us to use, and allowed us ample time to decorate ourselves. We had a tasting to select our menu, and it was hard to pick since everything was so yummy! The Swaneys were very accommodating and helpful with every step in the planning process. We couldn't have asked for an easier time with booking, planning, and setting up. And our wedding day was no different! It was our dream wedding reception; it was so beautiful; our guests raved about the venue itself and the delicious food. Enough said! We've even been to another wedding reception there, and had a wonderful time as guests as well. It was a lot of fun seeing it from the other side!

The Reception of my Dreams    posted 8/9/2013

Well let's see....where do I begin with all of the good things that I have to share regarding this venue? At the beginning seems appropriate, because truly from start to finish, the process was quite simplified due to the expertise of Michele and Doug Swaney. My initial contact with The Franklin Room was via email and I received a very quick response with lots of detailed information including venue pricing, parking options, and food & drink options. Even more impressive was the fact that service charges & taxes were broken down PER PERSON to truly give us a clear picture of total cost and a reassurance that there would be no hidden fees. This was pretty refreshing considering several of the other venues we checked in the area were not nearly as forthright. The next step was to, of course, visit the location, and wow, were we blown away! It's huge, classically decorated, and completely centrally located for the majority of our guests. We received a personalized guided tour from Michele and an invitation to do a tasting of the food that we were considering for the event. Clearly, we were sold immediately! After this, I was in touch with Michele many, many times. She was always very easy to contact, willing to provide information and suggestions, as well as to accommodate our every whim throughout the months leading up to our reception. The night before our big event, Michele and Doug were also kind enough to welcome us at the door to ensure that we could decorate, collaborate with our DJ, and finalize the details of our big night down to a T. On the big night, everything went without a hitch! Michele and Doug opened The Franklin Room up early for us to do last minute prepping, take formal pictures, and allow our DJ and cake decorator the opportunity to get everything set up just right. Michele and her staff, took care of many minor details for us such as filling our centerpieces, adjusting our lighting just right, and even filling our champagne flutes for us right before we sat down at our head table and toasted our marriage. I cannot tell you enough what a great comfort it gave me knowing that we were in such good hands. After the fact, we received rave reviews from our guests--how "spacious" it is, the "amazing food," the "attentive staff".....truly, they went on and on. It gave us great pleasure to know that everyone enjoyed such a fun memorable night, just as much as my husband and I did. The Swaneys are kind, gracious, experienced, and so, so accommodating. In my humble opinion, this is not only the best choice for a reception, but the only choice to host a wedding reception so personalized that you feel like you are working with family.

Very Happy with Everything    posted 7/17/2013

Michele and Doug were so amazing to work with and we highly recommend The Franklin Room as a wedding reception venue. Michele was quick to respond to emails, extremely flexible, and provided great suggestions on how to set-up the room (while trying to save you some money along with it!). The ballroom is stunning and a great venue if you are looking to be close to downtown without the extreme prices downtown venues typically cost. Half of our guests were from Chicago and we wanted a city feel with a fun area for our guests to venture out at after the reception was over. It was the perfect location. The food was great, Michele and Doug were there the entire time to make sure everything went smoothly, and I have gotten nothing but compliments about the venue. If you go with The Franklin Room you will not be disappointed!

Super Accommodating and Delicious Food!    posted 7/16/2013

The space is big, with tall ceilings, vintage chandeliers, hard wood floors, and the biggest dance floor we came across. The co-owner, Michel, was the most accommodating and gracious person to work with. She granted all of my ideas and wishes, and made our wedding reception flow smoothly and ahead of schedule. The food was AMAZING! We received so many compliments about the food. We opted for food stations—Sliders, Fajitas, Pasta and Mashed Potato Bar. At each station, there was more than just those items. For example, the pasta had an Italian salad and bread, the fajitas had a southwest salad and several toppings, the sliders had a potato salad side and many condiments, and the mashed potato bar had both regular potato and delicious sweet potatoes with DOZENS of toppings, plus they were served in martini glasses. Again, our guests raved about the food, and I think the favorite was the martini mashed potato bar. I love variety, and they sure had everything covered!! Overall, we couldn’t be happier with choosing The Franklin Room for our wedding reception. I will miss working with Michel!

PERFECT!!    posted 7/7/2013

The main reason I chose The Franklin Room is because they were as excited as we were about doing an all vegetarian reception. Most places we talked to were just like "oh, I guess we could do that." The attitude at the other places kinda brought me down, but then I talked to Michele and Doug Swaney, who run The Franklin Room, and I knew I just had to have my reception there. AND IT WAS THE BEST WEDDING FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD!! Seriously. We got so many compliments on the food. I was thrilled. The meat eaters at our wedding didn't even really miss the meat. Our menu was this: vegetable lasagna, black bean sweet potato enchiladas, gourmet mac & cheese, and a mashed potato bar with Idaho potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, and mashed cauliflower with a ridiculous variety of toppings. It was totally different from the standard wedding food. And the price was pretty affordable for our 200+ guest list. Also, The Franklin Room is a beautiful World's Fair ballroom, not your typical banquet hall. Michele and Doug were super easy to work with as well. I highly recommend this place to everyone!

We love the Franklin Room!    posted 6/12/2013

We couldn't have been happier to have discovered the Franklin Room which proved to the perfect choice for our wedding reception. The Owners, Michele and Doug, are a truly amazing duo. Michele goes the extra mile to help plan and coordinate all the reception details (no matter how much gets thrown at her!) and her husband, Doug, who is also Head Chef, hooks your taste buds with the delicious food prepared in his kitchen. The food here is really amazing, We literally sat for the first tasting (one of many venues) and knew instantly that this was the place. My husband recommends the Cajun style stuffed mushrooms! In fact, he asked Doug to call him anytime anyone orders them so he can place a side order for pickup. 
The Franklin Room was built back during the World fair, and it carries a certain charm that you do not find in many, if any, venues in St. Louis. It has a huge ballroom with wood floors, high ceilings (this was a must for me and very hard to find) and a great stage which we were able to fully utilize (we had a live jazz trio during cocktail hour and dinner, along with a DJ to MC and take over the dance floor later, we even had room for a special performer to come in, all of which were done on the stage!) Feedback from our guests all included how impressed by this place they were, how shocked they had not heard of it sooner since it was so unique and beautiful, and the food was really delicious! We really wanted to provide a unique wedding experience for all our friends and family, which we felt was achieved many times over.
Michele was so accommodating, she is like the “fairy godmother” of wedding receptions, as corny as that might sound, I’m still in awe of how the wedding reception was able to come together perfectly with her help, she was there all along the way. Any time I had a question, she always had good insight to provide, and if she didn’t right away, she would find a way to get you a solution. I consider myself pretty detail attentive and I had probably gone over details with her over and over, but every time she was very patient with what I had to say/ask, and helped me resolve any worries I might have had. Looking back on the wedding, I can honestly say my wedding would not have gone as smoothly without Michele, and for that I am so thankful for her.
Michele and Doug are really wonderful people, and if you go with the Franklin Room, you will truly be in very good hands. We have nothing but good things to say and remember about this place, We love the Franklin Room!

We got many compliments on the venue. The coordinator there is very accomodating and friendly (but can be a little scatter-brained at times). The food was delicious! No compliants and would definitely have it there again!

It's simply the best!    posted 11/1/2012

We had our wedding reception at the Franklin Room in September. The Room is perfect! Michele was very easy to work with and willing to accomodate any of our ideas. We were able to bring centerpieces etc the week of and set up was very easy. The Room is perfect if you want something uniquely vintage. Our guests were very impressed and still making comments. We have also received positive comments about the food which was something I was nervous about because we booked without trying it. They were even accomodating with my vegan and gluten free family and friends. The stage was perfect for our band as well. The dance floor was packed all night. I really cannot say enough good things about the entire experience with the Franklin Room. If we were to get married again we would definitely go back to the Franklin Room!

classic elegance    posted 11/1/2012

Michele and Doug made my son and daughter-in-law's wedding an evening to remember. We had the ceremony and reception at The Franklin Room and planned both in less than two months. We couldn't have done it without them. They are also invaluable resources for reasonably priced florists, DJs, etc. It is one-stop shopping! They are relaxed and helpful and were just what we needed during what could have been a very stressful two months.

Classic venue, wonderful and helpful owners    posted 8/28/2012

My in-laws hosted a sangeet (traditional Indian event with dinner, singing, and dancing) for us at the Franklin Room last summer the night before our wedding. After searching almost every venue in the city for something within their budget, I was overwhelmed with delight to find the Franklin Room. The venue was perfect. I loved the historic charm, and my husband found the stage and overall setting was perfect for an event that focused on musical performances. Not only was the venue beautiful, but Doug and Michelle were amazing. Doug's interpretation of classic Indian dishes pleased both the Indian guests and those less exposed to Indian food. Michelle was so helpful and sweet in every step of planning. I found myself sometimes wishing I was hosting the wedding reception there or had another event to plan with them. And the price was unbeatable! I cannot say enough good things about the Franklin Room.

Awesome!    posted 7/23/2012

The venue was great. Had a vintage feel with tall ceilings, wood floor, very spacious! The owners, Michelle & Doug were great to work with. I made my own center pieces and they let me come in two days before to set up! The night ran so smooth and we had so many compliments on the food! Our guest # was 200 and they offered a comparable package that even included the DJ (TKO). You will not be disappointed with this venue!

Romantic and unique!!    posted 1/12/2012

We LOVED The Franklin Room! The location in Soulard is so charming and convenient for guests wanting to continue the party after the reception. Plus, downtown has TONS of hotels for guests to stay. The Franklin Room owners, Doug and Michelle, were SO nice, helpful, and constantly available to answer my 100's of questions. And not only did we love The Franklin Room, so did our guests! We got tons of compliments on the unique atmosphere, DELICIOUS food, and just their overall experience. I seriously don't regret anything about it!

Awesome Reception Venue    posted 1/7/2012

From the planning stages to the evening of the reception, Michele and Doug Swaney couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating! Michele was patient, answered all our questions, was willing to do anything to make my daughter's wedding reception magical...and it was!! The room set up for 200 people was elegant; the staff professional; the food was delicious; the bartender was fantastic. If we could do it again tomorrow, we would.

Best Wedding Reception ever!!!    posted 10/7/2011

My whole idea for our wedding reception venue was a ballroom, that had an older charm and class to it with a kind of vintagey feel. I knew from the moment I found The Franklin Room, that it was exactly what i wanted. And then to find out that the new owners and I almost had the same last name (off by one letter), I just knew it was meant to be:) Michele and Doug were just a pleasure to work with. Doug is a fantastic chef, and we are still hearing about how delicious the food was at our sit down dinner that night. The sauteed chicken breasts with the white sauce and mushrooms and the asiago'd potatoes were to die for!! Michele was on top of and so helpful with every detail, it made the whole planning and prepping process so easy. And i agree with another review that a band is perfect for this venue. The big stage behind the awesome head table is the perfect setting for a great band! My dad always says: "Good food, good booze, and great band....that makes for a great reception," and that's what we had! My mom (God love her!!) is one of the most difficult people to please, and she was blown away by everything the night of our reception. That is why i would without a doubt recommend The Franklin Room to any and everyone!
I wish we could do it all over again, because everytime I see people who attended, they bring up what a great time they had and how it was one of the best weddings they have ever been too......so can you blame me?!!
Thanks again to Doug and Michele for making our special night such a great and memorable one, not only for us but for everyone that attended!

Classy, Elegant, Everything We Wanted!    posted 9/22/2011

The new owners are absolutely fabulous. Michelle was even there the day before my wedding and helped me set up centerpieces. (She doesn't book a wedding or event the day before yours so vendors/you have plenty of time to set up.) The food was amazing. We had a sit down dinner - the first the Franklin Room had ever done - and it was flawless! The waiters all entered the room at the same time and began serving food. It was wonderful! The ambiance is historical, classy, elegant, romantic... everything we wanted! The one thing that may worry others about booking their even here is the flight of stairs you must climb to enter the reception room. We were a little worried about this, but there are several landings, all with a chair for those who need to rest. There are also young men available to assist those who need extra help. Our wedding guests (200+) had an amazing time and all were impressed with the Franklin Room. I will recommend this establishment to every future bride and groom I meet. It helped make our wedding day memorable and perfect.

Better than expected.    posted 9/13/2011

Upon reading previous reviews we were a little skeptical about using The Franklin Room, but with hopes that the new owners would be different we definitely we not disappointed. We didn't have to be sold on the room because its' beauty and grandeur speaks for itself.
We much appreciated that The Franklin Room offers catering and alcohol options to fit any budget. Not only was the room impressive but the food was amazing! We booked the buffet and it did not disappoint. I had people telling me days later how good the food was.
One thing I would reccommend for this location is that you definitely have to book a band. We did and anything less would have not done the hall justice. I believe a DJ would have been swallowed up by the massive stage and it would have been difficult to get to the DJ request any songs. Another plus is that we were allowed to come to the hall on Friday and set up and we didn't have to worry about breaking anything down until the Monday after the reception. When we got there on Monday everything we had brought in was already waiting for us in the front foyer. This site is very classy and worth every penny we spent!
