GREAT MEMORIES posted 2/28/2013 (modified 2/28/2013)

As my daughter and son-in-law lived out of town, they gave me the responsibility for choosing the photographer for their wedding. We all agreed that this would be one of the most important, and certainly the most enduring, aspects of that special day.

David Lindner and his staff made it everything we hoped for. Our venue, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, is a space where he had worked often, which made the experience flow very easily. Both the formal shots and the candid ones, which are my favorite, capture the evening beautifully. When I look at the wedding album (which is more often than I'd like to admit), it tells a gorgeous story from beginning to end, thanks to his expertise.

There were so many flattering photos that narrowing it down was not easy.
As table shots are kind of a thing of the past, I do wish I had gathered more groups of friends for photos, but that was my own oversight.

We picked David Lindner Photography because of their extensive work at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where both our wedding ceremony and reception were to be held. They are not inexpensive, but as friends advised us, if you're going to splurge on certain aspects of your wedding, photography is one of those categories. One friend used a friend of the family for her wedding, and regretted it when she saw the low quality of the pictures. These are your most tangible memories of your treasured day -- why risk getting less-than-professional shots?

We used David Lindner himself for our main photographer, and we did add a second photographer, which is definitely not necessary but did allow for a lot of candid moments to be caught that otherwise we might have missed with just one photographer trying to catch it all. Plus, the second photographer could be at the hotel taking getting ready shots of myself and my mom and attendants, while David was at the venue taking pictures of my groom, his attendants and family, and guests as they arrived.

My groom and I wanted to be traditional and not see each other before the wedding, which meant that any pictures of us together would have to be after the ceremony. David made that happen effortlessly, and we didn't feel rushed but also didn't feel that we'd missed out on much of our own reception. A good deal of that is owed to how well David knew the venue. He knew the right places to go at certain times of the day, with just the right natural light. There was no hesitation or guesswork. We'd wondered how they would be able to take shots of us in the garden without the many visitors showing up in them, but they were expert at keeping random people out of the shots, either by picking the right location or angle, or by effective crownd control.

The pre-wedding shots are great captures of the excitement and specialness of the day. The ceremony shots look like a dream. The reception shots are full of glorious life and light. We told them we wanted to stay away from cheesy pics, those "let's all jump up in the air together with pumped fists" pics and the oh-so-posed "gaze into each other's eyes like you're all alone", awkward dramatic dip shots. We had nothing to worry about. Our pictures look natural, candid, spontaneous, and they were able to capture moments we didn't even realize had happened. I had read one review of the studio where the bride said the pictures made her and her groom look like movie stars. I said, "Oh, oh, I wanna look like a movie star!" :-) And many of our shots do indeed look like something out of a movie.

The support staff at Lindner's studio is also great. They're very helpful and friendly, and a pleasure to work with. Here you definitely get what you pay for -- truly beautiful work conducted by thorough professionals, and so many gorgeous pictures that the hardest thing to do will be to narrow down your favorites.

Before we got our proofs back, we were impressed with the way the photographer handled our family and our time. The photographer clearly took the time to learn about our family and was prepared to handle the many different 'personalities' and navigate / avoid familial dramas. When we got our proofs back, we couldn't believe how thorough they were - a great mix of candids and formal images. All shots were well bracketed. We have more beautiful photos than we know what to do with! And we are two of the pickiest people on the planet when it comes to pictures. Wow! We love our wedding so much, we want to marry it!;Took longer than expected to get our proofs. But it was worth the wait!
