Q. We're marrying in my fiancé's hometown of West Des Moines, and I've got quite a few diehard antiquers and bargain hunters in my family who'll be in town for our wedding next December. We'd love a few suggestions for antiquing in the area -- we might even do a bit ourselves on our next planning visit to see if we spot anything for our wedding!
A. Iowa's antique stores provide a mecca for serious collectors and bargain-hunters alike, with tons of rare finds and fabulous bargains. Those looking to scour a flea market for diamonds in the rough shouldn't miss the Brass Armadillo, (800) 775-2140, Des Moines, one in a chain of antique megamalls. With a selection of antiques that date back more than 100 years, modern collectibles, plus vintage, retro, and reproductions, this antique bonanza has zillions of great finds just waiting to be discovered. Also in Des Moines, don't miss the Majestic Lion Antique Center, (515) 282-5466. It's got a great selection of rare books as well as Victorian and period furniture.
