Vendor Reviews

My Dress: David’s Bridal (Warwick RI) A
Nothing huge stands out, but I do believe the service you get depends on your consultant. Unfortunately, it’s been so long since I bought my dress that I can’t remember the name of the girl who helped me! Looking back, I would have waited a little longer before purchasing my dress (I think I bought it about a year and a few months out), but overall I was happy. I’d recommend them, but make sure you feel comfortable with your consultant!

Tiara: Simply Dainty (Cranston RI) A
A very cute little shop, with soooo many options in tiaras, veils, and bridal jewelry. My tiara was one of the first things I bought, although for the life of me I can’t remember the name of the woman who helped me (I DO remember that it wasn’t the owner). She was extremely patient, helpful, and refreshingly non-pushy. She even helped me with a makeshift updo so I’d get a more accurate idea of what would work with my dress and initial hairstyle. The price of the tiara also includes a veil in your choice of style. As with the dress, I wish I had waited a little longer before buying a tiara, since I changed my mind so many times between when I bought it and the wedding. However, I would highly recommend this shop!

Veil: knottie dkgarber A
A very beautiful sheer veil that Diane wore to her wedding, and such a steal! I loved wearing it, and even though it would have been easier to have taken it off for the reception (because of my loose hairstyle, it fell out at the end of our first dance), I couldn’t bring myself to do it—hey, when else in my life will I be able to wear a veil without being thought of as a kook?

Shoes: Zappos.com A
Good selection, speedy (and FREE) shipping, and free return shipping…what more can a shoe-obsessed girl ask for? Probably one of my favorite online shoe sites, especially since you can choose your desired heel height (especially important since I needed fairly flat shoes so I wouldn’t tower over Mike). I’ve already worn them a few times since the wedding, and every time someone has complimented me on them!

Alterations: Lydia Colombo (Stratford CT) A+
Lydia was a doll to work with, was very accommodating, and was reasonably priced. She was also extreeeeeeemely patient—there was a problem with the bodice boning that we hadn’t noticed before I picked up my dress the day before leaving for RI for the wedding. She made herself available at 10 PM (the only time I could meet her due to my crazy work schedule), and didn’t even bat an eyelash—my dress was ready by noon the next day. I love her, and her work is fabulous! Highly recommended!

Makeup: Kristin Greene A++
What a doll! Like so many brides have said before, she is such a wonderful person to have around you on your day. It was a rather hectic morning that day, but by the time me & my girls got back from the salon to my room @ OC, Kristin was there and set up, and she really helped to calm us down. (Plus, a girl NEVER tires of being called beautiful J) She gives you tips to keep your makeup fresh (blotting papers included), and you get a little pot of lipstick & gloss, along with a kit of mini-brushes and a cute bridal straw (so you don’t mess up your lipstick, duh!). And my makeup (other than the lipstick, which I knew I’d have to reapply—no big whoop) stayed PUT all night, through sideways rain and many MANY tears. Kristin rocks!

Hair: Renee and staff @ Ki-Ra Salon
A
These girls were great! The only problem I ran into was solved before it even turned into a issue—Trish, the girl who did my initial hair trial, ended up leaving the salon a few months before my wedding. I found out when I called to verify I had appointments for everyone that needed them, and they booked me for a free hair trial with another stylist (which worked out well in the end, since by that time I had changed my mind about how I wanted my hair anyways). All my girls looked fab, and the staff was very accommodating—including when we almost had to tack on 2 more updos when my BIL’s girlfriend (who was supposed to style my MIL & GMIL) got sick at the last minute…poor thing! My GMIL also had her makeup done there, and she looked gorgeous—not overly made up at all. And, when it started raining, one of the stylists (who wasn’t even working on anyone in my party!) gave me her umbrella and just had me leave it with the front desk @ OC for her son to pick up later. (I wanna say her name was either Carol or Sharon – short blonde hair – what a sweetie she was!) So a big YAY to these gals for keeping me from going Bridezilla on Mother Nature! Highly recommend these babes!

BM Dresses: Netbride.com A+
RAVES about Netbride! I ordered 5 different styles of Bari Jay BM dresses from them, and they were shipped quickly and with no problems! Plus, they’re sooo much cheaper than buying from a bridal salon (my girls each saved about $50!)…each tried on the different styles at their local stores so they knew what size they needed. I had the dresses all shipped to me, and then I distributed them to each girl. I highly recommend them!

Invitations: Regency Invitations A+
Mike got a great discount on this brand of invites through his company, so we woulda been nuts NOT to use them. They have a large selection of traditional and contemporary styles, and they were done MAD quick (as in ordered on Monday, at Mike’s office on Thursday). I’m not sure if this is their typical turnaround time, or if it was due to the fact that DH’s company has a standing relationship with them, but I was very happy with the results. Everyone commented on how pretty and elegant they were, and now that the wedding is over I can’t wait to send out our pretty little thank you notes! (Crazy, eh?) So based on our experience, I would recommend them.

Shells: BlueSeasTrading.com A
Good service, great shell selection. They normally have an order minimum (either $50 or $100, I don’t remember offhand) since they’re a wholesaler, but if you call and ask Anna nicely, she’s usually pretty flexible. We bought 3-1 gallon large-sized shell mixes and 300 single pectin phallum shells (they were out of the pairs, which is what I originally wanted for my place card holder project), and they arrived quickly and, most importantly, unbroken! One caveat: they don’t always have everything in stock, so make sure to call first. I would recommend and use them again, but only if I made sure I had enough time for them to get in the shells I really wanted.

Candy for Candy Buffet: metrocandy.com A
The best deals I was able to find online for bulk candy, although I got a good portion from WalMart and Brooks as well (I got my M&Ms & Cadbury mini eggs at the after-Easter sales). Metrocandy has more of the tough-to-find stuff (i.e. large bags of Ring Pops, spearmint leaves, and rock candy sticks), and they give you a 10% off coupon if you sign up for their email list (it basically negated the shipping costs, which can be pretty substantial if you get a lot of stuff). Shipping was quick, and the candy arrived unbroken and very tasty! Girls purchasing bulk chocolate, be forewarned: shipping costs may be higher during the hotter weather, so it may be a good idea to check out your local stores first. I’d recommend them, but since they may be more expensive due to shipping, check out prices at bulk discounters like Sam’s Club & Costco first.

Favor Bags for Candy Buffet: Papermart.com A
Not much to say here…fair pricing, quick shipping, quality product. I was happy with the results, and I’d recommend and use them again.

Starfish Necklaces for BMs: EvesAddiction.com A
SparklesForever.com C
This project probably took the most time, since I’m cheap and waited for the different styles of necklaces to go on sale. EvesAddiction definitely has the better selection of starfish necklaces (as well as other styles as well), but their prices were a little high…so how did I solve it? Every weekend they have 50% off 4 specific styles, which they send out in a newsletter. I got 3 of the 5 necklaces this way, and I ended up saving quite a bit! They have free shipping on all orders over $75, so it’d really be worth it if you find a particular style that you like for all your girls, and just order everything in one fell swoop. I wasn’t as happy with SparklesForever, although it wasn’t because of the quality of their products (both websites were good in this respect). The thing that irked me the most was that I had ordered several items from them, including 2 starfish necklaces. One of the necklaces was on backorder, which I didn’t find out until I received the package and invoice of the other items I purchased! Once I called, I was told the item should be coming in about a week, and that the customer service rep (Beth) would contact me as soon as they came in. I got a call from her a few days later, saying that the style had been discontinued, but that she had found one in the back of the storeroom for me. I wouldn’t have been so upset if I had just been told this from the outset (online it said the item was in stock, and I still think they have the item listed for sale on their website)! It was poor customer service in my mind. So the moral of this story is: just order from EvesAddiction! :-)

String Quartet Gifts, Monogrammed Locket for Bouquet: LillianVernon.com B+
Good selection, free monogramming, and discounts on most items bought in bulk (i.e. more than 2-3 of the same item). The only reason I gave them a lower grade was due to the long shipping, which according to them was due to the shipper and not any fault of their own. They get mad props for their speedy customer service though…I emailed them around 11 PM at night requesting info on why my order was delayed (figuring they’d respond in the morning), and I received a reply not 10 minutes later! So kudos to their customer service, but their shipping method leaves something to be desired.

Monograms: knotties Danidoodles, beckerella
A+
beckerella did our RI License plate MG, and Danidoodles did the other ones. Both gals rock, and I’ve gotten compliments on all of them. Rock on knotties; high recommendations their way!

Rings: Alex @ Father and Sons Jewelry, Huntington LI
A
Pretty designs, great prices. The guys there are wonderful, and every time we’re in the area visiting DH’s fam, we’ll stop in and they’ll rhodium dip my rings for me. I’d recommend them to anyone who’ll be in the Huntington area.

OOT Hotel Room Blocks: Howard Johnson and Hampton Inn, Middletown
A
No complaints with either of these hotels. They both gave us discounted room rates for booking multiple rooms, and both had nice, clean rooms. No reports from any of our guests with any difficulties in booking rooms and getting the discounted rates. Since we had SO many OOT guests, we didn’t have the time/money to pull together welcome bags, so I’m afraid I can’t give any info on how helpful they are with distributing OOT bags. However, I’d still recommend brides w/OOT guests to check them out.

Rehearsal Dinner: Le Bistro, Newport RI
A
This grade is solely for what I saw at the RD, since my IL’s did all the legwork on this one. The food was excellent and the service was good as well. Even though we hadn’t booked the entire place per se, we were the only one there the entire time. They even printed special menus just for us, with our names and wedding date on the front!

DJ: Suzanne of Moondance DJ
A
Suzanne was great, both throughout the planning process and on the day of the wedding. We met with her twice before the wedding, and we talked for hours about what we liked/didn’t like, and I really felt like she understood our style by the time we were done. She stuck by our play/do not play list, and did a great job keeping the party going. She even let my little brother (an electronics junkie) assist her for a while…major kudos for that! She gets the Patrissi stamp of approval.

Officiant: Rev.Fr. Michael Scarlett
A+
Rev. Mike was awesome! Since we had originally planned on having an outdoor ceremony, we couldn’t find a Catholic priest who could/would perform the ceremony. Enter Rev. Mike, a Reformed Catholic priest (close to Catholic, but a little less strict…he’s married!). He & DH were constantly communicating via email, and we met with Rev. Mike a few times at the Borders in N.Attleboro (a midway point for the both of us). Everyone loved the ceremony, and my BM who was just recently engaged even asked me for his contact info for her wedding! Highly recommend!

Cake: J&K Kreations
A+
OMG, our cake was gorgeous! Neither one of us are big cake people (although I DO have a rather large sweet tooth), but we both loved this beautiful confection. Jess & Kristen were wonderfully easy to work with, giving just the right amount of direction since I just had a vague idea of what I/we wanted. And it tasted marvelous too! Highly recommend these gals!

Tuxes: Men’s Wearhouse
A
The guys looked fab, but this was DH’s realm, so I can only go off of what he told me! Since the guys were all from Long Island, they all got their tuxes down there, so I can’t share any info on the local shops. Their prices were reasonable, and as far as I know there were no issues with fittings and pick ups/drop offs. Recommend.

Florist: Golden Gate Studios
A++
Definitely one of my favorites vendors!!! Jay and Melissa were wonderful to work with, and I was floored by their attention to detail! Since our overall budget was tight to begin with, we had to trim our flower budget as well…and this wasn’t an issue with GG at all. I’m really not a flower person, although I did have a few ideas of what I liked, and our meetings with Jay & Melissa were really productive; I truly felt like they understood what we were looking for, and I think the pictures just begin to do them justice! We got quite the bang for our buck (check out my pics to see the great work they did), and even a few items that I’m pretty sure they threw in for good measure (cuz I don’t remember specifically requesting ‘em!). And as many former GG brides have said, I was STUNNED by my bouquet! I wish I had more dough to spend on flowers, since I’d love to see what they could have done if money were no object. I’d definitely recommend them to any bride!

Photographer: DB Photography
A
Dave was very helpful throughout our entire planning process! He was definitely one of the most reasonable photogs we found, and he was the only one who booked in 2-hr blocks. We wanted someone who would give us the copyrights once the wedding was over, which Dave does, and he also gave us a CD with all of the shots he took (maybe around 750!). He was attentive throughout the day, making sure to get to OC well before our ceremony started to shoot most of the formals (we chose to see each other before the ceremony so we could enjoy our cocktail hour). Despite the bad weather, Dave did his best to get some outdoor shots since he knew how important they were to me, so kudos to him for that! One thing I wish I had done was give him a list of all the pictures I wanted taken (yeah, completely my fault)…there were some shots that we didn’t get because of this, but Dave’s not to blame. He also had all our pics up on his hosting website by Monday or Tuesday after our wedding…hooray! I’d definitely recommend him to any knottie looking for a good photographer on a limited budget (like we were)!

Ceremony/Reception Site: Ocean Cliff
A+++
All I can say is: Oh My Goodness, these people are AWESOME! DH did most of the negotiating as far as cost/payments/etc, so I’m not the best resource for this info. I CAN say that their staff is VERY detail-oriented, and as many OC brides before have said, you really don’t need a wedding planner since they take care of everything. We met with Jim the catering manager a few times before our big day, and at our final meeting with him we met our event manager Amy, and I have nothing but praise for the both of them. We had originally planned to do the ceremony outside, with cocktail hour following on the patio, but Mother Nature had other plans (remember the deluge on Mother’s Day weekend, anyone?) I was disappointed, but the staff at OC did a great job, and many guests commented on how much they enjoyed the ceremony, and no one mentioned anything about feeling cramped during our indoor cocktail hour (I was worried about the timing of the set-up and take-down, since the ceremony takes place in the ballroom where all the tables are set up, but these guys have their stuff down pat). While the evening was not without its hitches, all we had to do was mention it once to Amy and she was right on it. If I had my wedding to do all over again, I’d definitely go with OC without hesitation!

The Cute Couple

I've tried to give credit where credit is due, but if I've been naughty and used your image, page me on the RI board and I'll either credit you or remove the offending picture. Thanks for looking, and happy planning!

Cute li’l blurry self-portrait of me & Mike

Another one of the two of us, taken at an awards ceremony honoring Mike’s dad.

Blurry pics of my gorgeous ring! Don’t mind my puffy fingers…

Engagement Pictures

My favorite e-pics, taken by our photographer Dave Bibeault of [DB Photography]. Funny backstory: I finally convinced FI that we should semi-match, and we were both sweating like crazy cuz it was hotter than h*** that day! Oh well…we had some good shots, though!

The Details

[OceanCliff]...the scene of the crime :)

A nice way to define the aisle...for our outdoor ceremony

I’d like to do something similar for my place card table

… with this type of DIY table card holder. (Courtesy of Martha Stewart Weddings)

Our beautiful toasting flutes (Jubilee by Lenox), a Christmas gift from my honey! I loved the Swarovski ones, but didn’t like the hefty price tag…and he got these for me! All together now: “Awwwwwwwww”

Paper Stuff

Some monograms created for me by WONDERFUL knottie [DaniDoodles]. I’d like to use #1 on our invites/placecards, and maybe #2 on our thank you cards.

STD found online by yours truly, and modified by FI to have our info and match our colors…so far, I’ve heard nothing but compliments on them! We sent them out about 6 ½ months before the wedding, along with a list of hotels in the area and their approximate rates.

One installment of my BM Newsletter

Invitations

Mike gets a sweet discount on Regency Invites through his company, so we’re looking at those! And the final choice is:

Flowers

Jay from [Golden Gate] will be doing the flowers for our wedding. I’m looking for a somewhat freeform bouquet with mainly blues and greens. I love the look of the more architectural bear grass, fiddlehead ferns, and branches…and I MUST have lamb’s ear in my bouquet as well! My mom grows it in her garden, and I absolutely love the plant. The BMs will have white peonies with green hydrangea or viburnum, and my MOH will have blush peonies with blue hydrangea. Jay has been wonderful during the whole planning process, and I can’t wait to see the finished products!

This one courtesy of [Amie2103] …though I’d have less pink & white and more blue!

Some boutonnière ideas. FI will have grape hyacinth framed by either lamb’s ear or popcorn green hydrangea, my brother will have a single white rose, and the guys will have hydrangea. I DO love the idea of the herbs, but Mike vetoed the idea.

This is my dad (on the right) a year before he passed away, interviewing Buffalo Sabre Curtis Brown…I miss him so much.

BTW, I’m loving Golden Gate…Melissa ran out after me since she forgot to give me this bouquet! So so cute!

Here are our centerpieces! I got the hurricane vases from A.C. Moore, the sand from Home Depot (50# bag of play sand), and bulk shells from blueseastrading.com.

Eats

Some cakes I like…to keep w/our seaside theme

Blurry Pic of Candy Bar Idea...maybe a mixture of blues, greens, & cream/ivory-colored goodies. I bought 6 jars at Christmas Tree Shops (3 medium, 3 large), 2 low bowls, 4 bubble bowls, a trifle dish, and 2 rectangular vases…I’ll take some pics soon!

A beautiful setup, courtesy of [N61105]. (Photo by [Options Photography]; please do not copy without her permission!)

I bought 200 white tin-tie bags from [Papermart.com], and I will decorate them with one of these 2 stickers I designed in Word.

Bridesmaids

After much debate, we’re going with tea-length L’amour satin [Bari Jay] dresses in seafoam green with sky blue trim for the BMs, and the reverse for my sis/MOH. I let my gals choose whichever style they wished, and here’s what they came up with!

And The Bride Wore…

My gorgeous dress! One of the first few I tried on, Galina style T8404 from [David’s Bridal] (sorry ‘bout the blurry pic). I got it in ivory, to minimize my ghostly whiteness…

I bought my veil from fellow knottie [dkgarber]; the 2nd pic is from her B-E-A-YOOtiful wedding!

LOVE this idea from [deblossio2], since my dress has a rather short train.

My tiara, a bit blurry, purchased through Simply Dainty.

My jewelry set, purchased through SparklesForever.com…matches nicely with the brooch I’ll be using for my bustle! UPDATE: this set turned out to be a little too overpowering, so I ended up wearing it at the morning-after Mother’s Day brunch at the Atlantic Beach Club (which was FABULOUS, btw!)

My vintage pearl & sequin purse, found for $12 at the local antique mall! Not quite sure if it will completely match my dress, as I don’t have any pearls in the beadwork, but I don’t think I care! Silly Shutterfly cropped the pictures a little extra…grrr.

My pretty pretty shoes, J.Reneé’s “Beach” purchased from [Zappos.com]. Absolutely PERFECT, since Mike & I are the same height, so I needed some pretty, not-so-tall shoes!

My Betsey Johnson garter that Mike’s mom got for me at our girls’ night out…so cute!

The Wedding Party!

(Well, the ones I have digital pics for, anyways…)

My roomie of 3 years and me at a sorority formal…we were a little tipsy at that point.

My mom & little brother…he’ll be walking me down the aisle

Another one of my brother, applying his piano lessons via his feet to the “Big” keyboard @ FAO Schwarz

And one more of the squirt, on the Circle Line cruise in NYC…can you tell I love him? :)

My little sis/MOH Mandy (on the right) with one of her college buddies!

The crazy one in the middle, doing her best “Charlie’s Angels” pose

Me and Kate, one of my BMs and my best friend since middle school!

A group shot from my bachelorette in Niagara Falls (L to R): Mandy/MOH, Kate/BM, me, and Kendra (my other best friend/BM and fellow bride-to-be!)

Our best man Eddie, livin’ it up at another wedding with someone from their bridal party

Mike & I with his parents

OK, so he’s not in the party, but I’ve got to give honorable mention to my buddy Matt for introducing me to Mike!

Gifts

I’m getting my girls each a different style of starfish necklace, purchased from either EvesAddiction.com or SparklesForever.com. I also bought them either blue or green wristlet purses from when Casual Corner was closing (such a deal!), some chapstick, and a little nail file. My sis/MOH is also getting a light green silk shawl.

Two of my college friends/quartet buddies and my old viola teacher are providing our ceremony music, so I bought them pretty (yet functional!) personalized page holders from Lillian Vernon…they’re bigger than I thought, which actually works out well!

My Shower

My mom & our family friend Paulette co-hosted the shower, and it was absolutely FABULOUS! My grandmother arranged for it to be held at the gym building of her church, and then Mom and her posse worked their magic. I was pleasantly surprised (ok, SHOCKED) by the amount of women who showed up, including some women who I hadn’t seen in years. Just about everyone chipped in by bringing food or helping set up or clean up…I really felt blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful women!

This table greeted the ladies as they came in. My mom came up with the ingenious idea of having everyone write their name and address on an envelope and put it in the basket so that I knew the correct address to send the thank yous to! (Which is gonna be a project in itself!) Everyone thought this was a great idea, and it’s definitely come in handy!

The centerpieces my mom made…hurricane vases with candles nestled in seaglass in our wedding colors. They were surrounded by shells and ribbons on the table, as well as one of our engagement pictures. We may use these on the bar or cocktail tables…so yay for my Mama! And check out the little purses in the foreground: Paulette hand-stamped all of these purses, used ribbon for a handle with a silver charm that says “Love”, and filled them with little Ziploc bags filled with butter mints!

Check out the mad loot!
