About our wedding:
Oh my gosh, I'm friggin married!
Truth: Ever since the wedding, I wanted to cleanse my life of anything wedding-related. It's like I woke up from some bridezilla spell and I returned to my uber-practical pre-wedding ways. But being engaged does weird things to you and the knot was so good to me during my own planning process. Reading through bios was probably the single most helpful tool in my own planning since you get to see what real girls do, instead of some unattainable martha stewart-ified wedding concoction. And I was a total clueless bride once I got engaged- I had never heard of Monique L'huillier or chivari chairs and I thought non-engaged girls who read wedding magazines were freaks of nature. But by some miracle of God, I pulled off a wedding and got married. So here I am, two months after the wedding, creating this "bio" that will hopefully be a resource for future brides (and cool grooms). Everyone says it and I'll just add to the chorus- our wedding was one of the happiest days of our lives. And it wasn't because the wedding was beautiful nor even because we put on a great party- we just felt so blessed to finally celebrate the day you get to marry the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I think a lot of brides forget about that during the planning process. Keep in mind that we tried our best to pull of this wedding on a graduate student shoestring budget. When we heard that average wedding costs were upwards of 30K, heads were going to roll. I was a nazi about minimizing costs but we allowed ourselves several splurges: letterpress invitations, alcohol (wine, beer, sangria, and signature drinks). and a sweet honeymoon. Other than that, we were able to throw a great party without breaking the bank. It wasn't a kertybride $6,000 wedding, but we were able to come in well under the average california wedding pricetag. If you have any questions, you can find me at my blog http://greengelato.blogspot.com. ![]() ![]() ![]()
My husband and I met in China four years ago working as English
teachers. Even though we lived a 7 hour ghetto train ride apart,
we were somehow still willing to endure those crazy standing only
rides, shoddy telephone connections, and yes, even the outbreak of
SARS! We made a bunch of other expat friends, all of whom
witnessed our budding romance.
Fast forward two years, I have lured this Michigander boy to Los Angeles where we are both on an eternal PhD track at UCLA. The day before he leaves for the Philippines to spend his summer working at an orphanage (heart of gold, that boy, sigh) he takes me out on final date to Duke's Malibu. Afterwards, he takes me to a cliff to take in the oceanview and while we're standing there, he points to a plastic bag lodged in a bush. What I thought was a piece of trash turns out to be a letterpressed Paper Source card with a puzzle drawn on it (I love puzzles). It turns out to be a phone number, I call it, and it's our Area Director from China! After catching up with her, she gives me the next puzzle which leads me to Zuma Beach. After chasing around multiple puzzles and catching up with our old friends from China, our last clue lands us at the top of Zuma Canyon, overlooking the California coast. He carries me over a trail of rose petals and proposes (in French). That last picture is me calling my mom. :) How he had the time and patience to plant all those clues all over and even step inside of Paper Source is beyond me. Rather than giving everyone an A++++++ (what does that mean, anyway?), I've separated my reviews into 3 categories: "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly". The Good Reception Site- Villa del Sol D’oro, Sierra Madre
During our engagement, we had planned on having a very simple country club wedding. We scored a great, almost too good to be true deal, and planning was underway…until I saw the Villa del Sol D’oro, which basically sent those plans flying out the window. The Villa is a 2/3 scale replica of the Villa Collazi in Florence, which is said to be Michaelangelo’s only architectural piece. The Villa is located at the base of the San Gabriel mountains and the actual grounds is ensconsed by citrus bearing trees, making one forget about the LA traffic that awaits on the other side of the gate. And I had visited the site several times, but nothing prepared me for how gorgeously surreal the actual night would be. Sitting on the travertine patio under the mediterranean lights on a warm summer night tricked everyone into thinking they had been whisked away to Italy. That, coupled with free flowing sangria and my favorite bossa nova songs playing, created something really magical. I hate to be so trite, but yeah, it sure was magical. Oh, and it’s around $4000 to rent. Hehe. Catering- Santa Anita Gardens Catering, Sierra Madre And this is where the magic stops: the Villa exclusively uses Santa Anita Gardens (SAG) for its catering and events. Sandy is the coordinator for SAG and working with her was pretty frustrating. As sweet and mother-earthy as she is, she is really disorganized and has terrible communication skills. She doesn’t email and rarely returns phone calls. She ended up dropping all these last minute, unexpected costs (like ice) even after I had repeatedly asked her to explicate everything I needed to pay for. Aside from that, the food is okay (but I’m also kind of a food snob). It’s your typical wedding fare, nothing too creative. You can see my picture of my menu, I had specifically requested that salad. The prices are very reasonable, but you also have to pay for waiters, bartenders, and security. They also provided my cake (at only $2 a slice) but it was actually lopsided and they added piping I had never requested. However, their cake is actually really delicious and several guests told me it was the best cake they had ever had (which is more important to me than a pretty cake). That, and I was too cheap to pay the cake cutting fee for an outsourced cake. Photography- Leigh Miller Photography, San Diego I actually started out with another photographer, but to make a long story short, I started to have a lot of doubts so I ultimately ended up switching to Leigh. It was a really costly and difficult decision, but it was probably the best one I made in my planning. It goes without saying that I love my pictures. They’re amazing! ? And Leigh is SO great to work with, she’s so personable, down-to-earth, and her work evidences that she loves wedding photojournalism. I also really like how she doesn’t over edits photos like a lot of trendy photographers tend to do; her work is timeless. Skies are realistic blues and emotions are captured in a real, non-contrived way. Day of Coordinator- Debbie Saetia of Le Chic Soiree I met Debbie (girliebride2b) off of the knot boards. Debbie was so great to work with and I think my wedding would have disintegrated to shambles without her. Since the Villa caterer was so disorganized, Debbie really stepped in at the end to bring order, peace, and her great creative suggestions. She really went above and beyond by providing her own candle holders, hanging votives, and other items- it shows her great eye for design and genuine love for weddings. Hair and Makeup- Valerie Jackson and Sarah ___? Sierra Madre 626.234.6060 Valerie owns her own cute studio in old town Sierra Madre. She also teaches hair styling and does makeup as well. She had her makeup artist friend Sarah help out on the day since I had nine ladies getting done. Everyone was so pleased with their makeup and hair- especially me! I was particularly surprised at how well my makeup had turned out. I’ve gotten my makeup done a number of times but Sarah really made me feel natural and beautiful. They were also so amiable and made us feel really comfortable before the wedding. They also travel on location. DJ- Ricky Neal kana2003 (at) aol.com I was sold by Ricky’s resume. He used to DJ for KCRW, the W hotel, the Standard, and does a lot of celebrity parties. Meeting him in person confirmed my excitement- we actually talked for a long time at Starbucks after I had signed the contract and had even talked about double-dating. He knows his music and appreciates an eclectic music set. He gave me a great deal because he himself was interested in checking out the Villa, so I was really grateful. He was great the day of the wedding, not too intrusive, and made a great party! Videography Roy Montejano rmjmedia (at) gmail.com I met Roy via craigslist, who offered to shoot one wedding for free for his portfolio. I wasn’t planning on hiring a videographer but how could I pass up free videography? I’m still waiting on the video, but Roy and his crew were awesome the day of. Actually, I barely even noticed them. I actually felt bad because they were so icognito that I didn’t have a chance to thank them in person. Well, I’m giving them a good review for now since Roy has been really great to work with and they were just as videographers ought to be- non-intrusive. Rentals- Mary’s Rentals, La Puente 626.855.0209 Mary’s Rentals is one of the best deals I found. They are a small mom and pop rental company in East LA and their prices are the lowest I found. Their rental list is not as extensive as the bigger companies, but I was able to get most of my items via Mary’s. They also didn’t charge me extra for satin champagne overlays since another bride had just special ordered them for her wedding. Great personable service. Rentals- Event Professionals Mary’s didn’t have wood chairs so I ordered natural brown wood ones at Event Professionals for only $1.50 each! That was at least a dollar cheaper than I found elsewhere. Bridal Salon- Jobyna’s Sample Sale, Glendale I busted a crazy bridezilla by going to an early morning sample sale. I went with my bridesmaids and was able to get “the” gown for 40% of the price. I don’t remember the brand name, but it was the 3rd dress I had tried on and everyone immediately knew it was “the one”. Veil- Ghetto bridal store in downtown fashion district
Seriously, a veil is a veil. I don’t remember where I exactly bought
it, but I overheard another girl complaining that she had bought the
exact veil for 10 times the price at Saks. You have to be kinda picky
though b/c some veils in that district feel and look cheap but for
whatever reason, some stores have high quality veils for like 10 bucks.
Save the Dates- Vistaprint I made my save the dates on a whim after seeing a coupon for 100 free postcards. We ordered 200 (with different accounts) and basically got awesome save the dates for the cost of shipping. I’ve heard of random brides around the nation copying my idea. I guess I’m flattered? It would be nice to be known beforehand, I guess. I’m really glad I sent out Save the Dates, though because my invites went out later than expected. Registries- Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Crate & Barrel/ I Do Foundation I loved all my registries, especially Amazon. Registering on Amazon basically means getting anything you want for your wedding- which is especially good for book and music nerds like me. Our guests also loved Amazon because of the free shipping. Our Amazon registry was connected to the I Do Foundation and a nice chunk of the proceeds went to the non-profit of our choice. Jewelry- Paris 1900 Paris 1900 is an uber cute French vintage wedding shop on Santa Monica’s trendy main street. I bought my dream necklace after I found out I passed my comprehensive exams as a treat to myself. Hee hee. I also got custom matching earrings since I couldn’t afford the ones at Paris 1900. Dieting- Trader Joe’s High Fiber Cereal I have to include this, hehe. I abhor exercise and restrictive eating so it is impossible for me to diet. I tend to snack when I get nervous and the week before the wedding, I ended up consuming this entire box of cereal in my anxiousness. And guess what? I lost weight for the first time in my life, thanks to this cereal. It doesn’t have quite the same impact after several weeks of eating it, so I’d save this secret weapon for the week before the wedding. Bridesmaids dresses- BCBG Warehouse One of my bridesmaids friends works at BCBG headquarters and she hooked me up with a free pass to their warehouse store for employees and their friends. The dresses are gorgeous in person and get this, were only $30 each! They have periodic sales to the public…the next one is on December 9th- it’s definitely worth going to (and waiting in line for). I was able to find 6 dresses in their exact sizes. Favors- Papermart and 99 Cent Store To my surprise, I found out that papermart.com was located in Los Angeles! I was able to pick up my favorboxes- 200 for like $50. I filled the favors with rainbow tootsie rolls from the 99 cent store. Votives- Walmart I did my research and walmart has the absolute cheapest votives- a 24 pack for only $4.99. The wick is right under the rim of the glass, which meets most fire hazard standards. Cocktail Hour food and alcohol- Koreatown & Costco I actually had Korean food during my cocktail hour in order to appease the Korean guests. I had dduk (ricecakes), fried shrimp, little veggie wrap things, potstickers, mini chicken things, a fancy fruit platter, and some other items. My mom did extensive research to find the best appetizers that would not be too crazy Korean and visually appealing. My caterer allowed outside food since it was “ethnic”. I saved a lot of money doing this, considering that SAG charges 2 bucks per potsticker!! I also purchased all the alcohol at Costco. This saved SOOOO much money! Engagement Pictures- Leah Mccormick and Cynthia Manchester My husband and I both love autumn and kind of spontaneously decided to visit New York and used engagement pictures to justify our trip out there. Getting multiple locations is more complicated in New York so we just hired Leah for Central Park pictures. But then I posted a “looking for photography student” ad in New York’s Craigslist and Cynthia, who was starting her business, responded, and shot us awesome pictures on the Brooklyn Bridge. They’re both great! Guestbook- Mypublisher. We used a 50% off coupon and ordered the “deluxe” book. My husband actually designed it and did a great job! The quality is really great (but not great enough for a wedding album, in my opinion). Invitation Envelopes- Envelopemall.com Definitely the most affordable place to get any kind of envelope you want. They also mail you free samples. Embosser- Paper Source We embossed our return address on our invitation envelopes. Gorgeous! The Bad Florist- Sierra Pyron @ Gracie’s Garden I hated my flowers with a passion. Where do I start? Sigh. One of my friends had hired Sierra and was really happy with her so I didn’t give it much thought, especially since Sierra was much cheaper than most florists. I think Sierra infused too much of her own vision into the design. I even sent her a lot of pictures, basically saying “just do this”, but the final product was totally different. She recently relocated to Tacoma, Washington and actually flew down for the wedding. I was really grateful for that and she was a total sweetie, but I was really displeased with the flowers. She made me a sample centerpiece a few days before the wedding and it was in a Styrofoam container- she thought it looked “rustic” and matched the site. No. So at the last minute, I had to add glass vases, something I had assumed was included in the price. I could drone on and on about this but I’ll just stop here. Alterations- Lillian MacDonald and Claudine of Bridal Perfections I had hired the famous and knottie-loved Claudine of Bridal Perfections to alter my gown. One day I received a call from her saying that she moved up north and that she had passed my dress onto her friend (even though she had promised me that she would finish the dress before the move). It turns out that Claudine hadn’t touched my dress and by the time it got to Lillian, but I still trusted Lillian’s work, judging from Claudine’s high praises. To make a long story short, I had to go to at least six fittings and she still couldn’t get the zipper right (you can see a picture of my MOH literally sewing the back of my dress shut before the ceremony). In addition, she had dogs and cats all over her house, and one day, there was dog feces everywhere and on another day, cat vomit everywhere. When I had approached her about the second incident (thinking it was dog feces), she just said, "It wasn't dog feces, it was cata vomit." OKAY! In retrospect, I wish I had just taken the dress elsewhere, even if it meant I would have lost the money and even though it was just weeks before the wedding. She was also the sweetest lady in the world so I didn’t have the guts to tell her. Letterpresser (invitations)- Susan Park Ryoo This was another knottie recommendation so I didn’t think I’d have problems. She was really nice and accommodating, since she’s a private contractor who usually works on corporate orders, but had trouble with my order. She messed up the first batch of invitations and had to do the entire thing over again (making them quite late). She also didn’t get the colors quite right and she gave me 50 less rsvp cards than I ordered, so that I had to drive to Orange to pick them up. Usually these things are not a big deal but when you are paying for letterpress, you want it to be perfect. The invitations are still gorgeous and I don’t regret working with Susan, but she just doesn’t receive a good recommendation from me. The Ugly. Kristie Lilje of Splendor Events (it’s probably a different name now) Pasadena So I have the mother of all nightmare wedding stories. One day, I received a call from my officiant saying that someone had posed as me, creating a similar email address, and tried to CANCEL THE WEDDING! Who the crazy does that?! Apparently, this person had located my vendor information off my knot bio and contacted most of my vendors (via phone and email) to cancel the wedding. I don’t have any enemies and I had recently had a really bad interaction with Kristie, another florist, so a lot of evidence points to her. I had found Kristie off of craigslist. She had just relocated to LA and was looking to do one wedding for free in order to build her up her clientele base. So I “hired” her and we met up to discuss flowers and sign the contract. After I met with her, I basically raved about her on the knot and she received several contacts from me. Soon after that, she emailed saying that she felt that she could not do my wedding since she already had her day job as a software engineer (and my wedding was quite large). This was after our first conversation where I insisted that I hire another vendor do all the centerpieces in order to alleviate her from the workload. After a few frustrated emails, that was that, leaving me to find someone else at the last minute- and all the “good” people were booked. I wrote about this situation on several wedding message boards, which I’m sure she saw. It looks like she may have retaliated by trying to stop the wedding? What a wacko! I wasn’t that upset though, I think I mostly felt kind of sorry for her. Geez, who does that kind of stuff?! ![]() Hm. After this whole wedding ordeal, I feel like I have so much information to unload and pass onto future generations of brides (especially since nearly all my close friends are single- I need to get this down now). I'm going to try to group things by category. Budget Issues Sticking to a tight budget also includes the unavoidable pricetag of your own patience and sanity as you hunt for ways to cut costs. A lot of girls on the knot place a high priority on keeping to one's budget (and rightfully so), but I think it needs to be said that spending a lot of time searching for a better deal is a huge cost in itself. That being said, it is possible to pull off an affordable, yet beautiful, wedding in pricey places like Los Angeles. My advice is to put your money in your reception site and photography- the rest are just details that will fade over time (if anybody notices them in the first place, that is). I remember when I obsessed over having either real glass martini glasses or plastic cups during my cocktail hour, and you know what? Nobody cares! I want to kick myself now for even losing 10 minutes of my life to that. On the other hand, it will become much easier to compromise on things as it gets closer to the wedding as costs just become random numbers mushing together. Buying your dress Pictures tend to be unreliable, especially those you'll find in magazines. Higher end dress companies will have better photographs, which invariably make their dresses more beautiful. However, expensive dresses doesn't always mean "better", and conversely, buying a cheap dress doesn't mean it's a good deal. Different dresses complement different body types so I think it's good to try on a range of dresses, even in a style you would have never considered. When dress shopping, avoid buying your dress from posh stores b/c you will end up paying for their rental space and extra customer service. You can usually find a less expensive version of that dress online, in another store, etc. If going to a sample sale, go early and bring friends- the best dresses will always go first. And lastly, it's just a dress. In my opinion, I think it's the least important area to splurge on, but then again I'm no fashionista. Most people tend to think that "all wedding dresses look the same" (like me before I got engaged). But if it's your one obsession item (like me and letterpress), then go for it! Photography I love photography and I've done my research. As for the perennial digital vs. film debate, it should come down to whose images you prefer- it just depends on what you're drawn to. Our engagement photographer used film and our wedding photographer was digital. Since images straight out of a digital camera will always be subpar, the photographer should do a bit of post-production work on the photos- and you want to make sure that those edits are reflected in your digital high-res files. Digital images with good post-production work are often seen as superior to film because they have the ability to tinker with the image. But it really does just come down to shooting talent- some of the best wedding photographers still use film (like Jose Villa), but it's looking like photographers are going digital in hordes. Also, film is NOT more expensive than digital because digital photographers must spend hours upon hours post processing the photos. I've heard of digital wedding photographers doing no post-processing work- those people are a total sham. I've also heard (and met) with film photographers who criticize digital- those people are charlatans who do a major disservice to the wedding photography industry by confusing brides and disrespecting their colleagues. You know how cheesy wedding photos in the 80s are so, well, cheesy? Well one day that will be us, my friends, because I really do think the current trend in oversaturating and washing out photos will be passe in a generation. I would recommend finding a true photojournalist, not someone who tries hard to be a fashion photographer. You want your wedding photos to document your day, and not reinterpreted through an artist's (however talented) eye. But that's just me. Read photography blogs. That will give you a very good idea of what their "average" is rather than their "best", which is typically on their website. Also, don't be fooled by packages that have all sorts of bells and whistles. I've seen so many brides on the knot say things like, "I'm getting this many pictures, this and that, this and that for only this much!" But the photography sucks. If you had to choose between a great photographer plus an album versus an amazing photographer but no album, I'd go for the latter. But make sure to get your high-res files or negatives!! To be continued...
