~ Our Wedding ~

Overall…

My husband and I had the happiest day of our lives and we have no regrets. We had a small and limited budget so planning was slow and difficult -- everything was a compromise. In the end, we were happy with the choices we've made and we had the wedding of our dreams. Both our families were very impressed. They had misgivings about traveling so far away (and spending good money) for our wedding, but afterwards they all agreed that they would do it again in a heartbeat. So for those of you whose families are giving you a hard time about your DW, don't lose hope! Everything will be better in the end and all your hard work will pay off.

Thank You…
To all the Hawaii and DW knotties who have offered help and support during the planning. You all deserve your fiance's (or husband's) love! I wish you all the best! If there is anything I can do to help you in your planning, feel free to page me on the Hawaii or DW boards.

Borrowing Photos…
It's my pleasure to share my photos, but please ask permission if you'd like to take any of them. Also, please give me and my photographer credit if you do decide to use any of the photos and ideas as inspiration. Mahalo!

White Orchid Beach House

We have always dreamed of getting married in Hawaii, and when I first set eyes on a picture of the White Orchid Beach House, I knew it would be THE place. We love it for its Old Hawaii beauty and its rocky, cove beach. And the scenery is just breathtaking! Everyone loved this place, and they never again questioned why we chose to get married on Maui.

I was just so darn happy!

~ Reception Details ~

Like other brides before me, I was extremely obsessive about the details during the planning, but learned in the end that the ulcer was not worth the trouble. Everything went as planned, of course, but I didn't even notice the little details until I got my pictures back! However, for the sake of showcasing a year's worth of planning, here are a few of the details that consumed most of my time this past year. The rest was spent knotting! Oh the good old days!

(Photos by Jessica Claire Photography)

The reception area. I'm glad we went with a clear tent and colored linens. It made everything look bright and cheerful despite the somber weather.

DIY place cards! Because votive candles were out of the question, I wanted to do something cool for our place cards and table cards. We used the sand from our hotel beach. Poor DH twisted all the wires by hand.

Here's the table set-up (we had 6 total). We had it down to the lotus napkin fold. We had assigned seating so each place card was set on top of the napkins. The guys set them up early in the morning while the ladies were getting pampered. Ha!

A close-up of the table card and centerpiece

Favors courtesy of Auntie Nalani's cookies. We handed them out to each guest as they left the beach house after the reception.

Our beautiful and delicious cake! A friend said it looked like a stack of hat boxes (square-round-square). The top and bottom layers are passionfruit, and the middle layer is chocolate and raspberry. I still dream about this cake. Mmmm...

One of the best things about having a small wedding -- you actually get to eat!

~ Brunch Reception ~

We had our brunch reception immediately after the ceremony. It was a casual elegant affair by the ocean, with good food, laid-back island music, and great laughs. And even though it rained for a little bit, the weather was on our side and we didn't bake in the sun. We were so glad to have been able to spend this time with our family and friends. Except for our first dance, we didn't have a "program" for the reception, which meant more time with our guests. We wouldn't have done it any other way.

(Photos by Tad Craig Photography)

We had our first dance as soon as we were announced at the reception.

Somewhere over the rainbow...

...dreams really do come true.

Slack key duo. The rain looked really cool from under the clear tent.

More kissy shots

Tossing the garter! I love the air shot of the garter. LOL!

The new owners of the garter and bouquet.

~ Family & Friends ~

We knew that having a destination wedding meant leaving a lot of people behind. But our family and friends respected our decision and never once gave us a hard time about it. It is their support that had enabled us to follow our dream. My parents always told me to count my blessings. Here they are.

(Photos by Tad Craig Photography)

The men and women who gave us so much love and support on our wedding day.

Our wonderful parents who gave us life and taught us the true meaning of love.

Bride's family ~ Groom's family (can you say "My Big Fat Greek Wedding")

Our dear friends who made our day truly special. We're lucky to have known such great people.

And of course, the adorable kiddies who brought us so much laughter!

I love this place.

~ Evening Party ~
The Royal Lahaina Resort Cottage

We threw a party in the evening at our honeymoon cottage to continue the celebration. I didn't plan this far into the wedding so everything pretty much happened spontaneously. I only booked a photographer, a bartender, and a couple of hula dancers, and rented some lights. Everything else fell into place because of our wonderful family and friends (a local family friend prepared the food, the boys bought the alcohol, my sister took care of the setup, my bro-in-law took the video, my uncle hosted the entertainment, a friend acted as DJ -- and he was really good), and everyone just had a really good time! So my advice, don't be afraid to ask your family and friends for help. They truly made our day so special.

(Photos by Lashawn Photographic)

Lanterns and luminaries around the pool and the makeshift centerpiece I came up with a few minutes before the party began (from leftover pool luminaries).

My niece sipping a cool lava flow.

Stepping out for some nooky.

Food and drinks (that's Stacey from Bars Are Us!)

Waiting for the entertainment to begin. DH didn't know I was PART of the entertainment.

And there I go! That's me in the middle, nervous as hell! We were doing an otea (the fast hip dance). This is all unrehearsed so I was PRAYING hard.

I think this is the first time DH saw me shake my boo-tay!

LOL! My poor DH! I was trying to teach him how to shake his hips. No use.

I pulled my mom and sis to do an impromptu performance (they used to dance pro when I was a baby). They still got it! Mom knew all the moves to Blue Hawaii.

Then it was the guests' turn!!! Everybody loves the Hukilau!

And for the finale...

Our awesome friend and DJ, Max, who kept the party going until the next day. We found him passed out in our living room in the morning.

~ Beach Photo Shoot ~

Well of course we had to do it! Jessica insisted! We did the beach photo shoot the day before, and we we had so much fun! Here are a few of my favorites.

I'd do this again anytime. :-)

~ DIY Projects ~

One of my favorite moments in planning our wedding is creating DIY projects. We wanted our wedding to include as many personal touches as possible. I love the way our DIY projects came out, and we've received a lot of compliments on them. For us, though, they will always serve as a testament of our patience with one another and our ability to work together. Through a system of trial and error we were able to create the following items:

(Please note: we worked very hard and spent a lot of time creating these items, but if you'd like to replicate or use any of them as ideas, PLEASE give us credit. Thank you!)

Map of Maui

Pocketfold invitations and RSVP postcards

Save-the-Date MIBs

Table set-up (excluding centerpieces)

Other items (no pics yet): OOT guest packets, guest book, display montage at the reception, thank you cards

~ Our Vendors ~

Photography ~ Various: J J J J J
We had three different photographers -- not all at the same time though. Because photos are very important to us (and our families who couldn't attend), we wanted to make sure that we had enough photo coverage on our wedding day. I think this was the only aspect of our wedding that we really splurged on, but it's the one thing that will stay with us for a lifetime.

Jessica Claire Photography: Jessica is just amazing and we absolutely LOVE our pictures! We originally had in mind to book Jay Reilly, but because he was not available for our date, he passed on my info to Jessica. She then contacted me and we took it from there! Unfortunately, however, Jessica had another wedding the next day back in California. Fortunately, my wedding was in the morning so I told her she need not stay for our reception so she can catch an afternoon flight back, and it worked out well. She did the beach photo shoot the day before as well as covered our welcome dinner in lieu of reception pictures. The day of, we had her for 5 hours to take getting ready, ceremony, and post-ceremony pics. We had a fabulous time with Jessica and our photos are all so beautiful!!! Our family and friends couldn't believe how amazing they are.

Tad Craig Photography: Luckily, our package with A White Orchid Wedding included 2 hours of photography. Because Jessica couldn't stay for our reception, we asked our coordinator to book Tad Craig for those 2 hours and have him come in during our reception (we chose him from their list of vendors because I've seen his work). Tad is really cool and laid-back, and he worked well under the rainy conditions (it rained on and off). I did feel bad that we hired him for the most part to shoot the family portraits and pics with our guests, which I think is the least favorite part among wedding photographers. But if he were put off, he never showed it. Tad is a really pleasant guy to work with during and after the wedding, and our photos came out beautiful!

Lashawn Photographic: I have always like Lashawn's work, so when we decided to book a photographer for the evening party, I contacted him right away. We booked him for an hour and a half, but the night of, he stayed for 3 hours! He came early too! Lashawn is awesome! If you want non-intrusive, photojournalistic style, then he is your man. We never saw him take the shots, but two weeks after the wedding, we had a CD with a ton of photos! He works fast and is an awesome photographer.

Coordination ~ A White Orchid Wedding: J J J J
I have been working with my coordinator, Steven, since August of 2004. He’s always quick to respond to my questions and requests and is very knowledgeable about the wedding industry on Maui. I always receive a warm reception when I call. Sure I’ve had run-ins with AWOW on their policies (especially when it comes to the White Orchid Beach House), but I never blamed it on my coordinator as he doesn’t make the rules. All I know is that Steven worked very hard to make our day as beautiful as we’ve imagined, cutting corners when possible, and that’s the most important thing for us. I also know that he’s working with a few dozen other brides whose weddings were closer in date than mine, but he always made time for me even a year prior to my wedding. Overall, I highly recommend Steven of AWOW for all your wedding planning needs.

Welcome dinner/drinks ~ Hula Grill: J J J J
To save on cost, we decided to have our friends join us for welcome drinks at the Hula Grill. The older adults (parents and relatives) went to the Old Lahaina Luau. We were going to pay for the bar tab but weren’t able to set it up because it was chaos at the Barefoot Bar. But our guests didn’t mind paying for their drinks. Then everyone decided to stay for dinner. The restaurant is really nice but the food took too long.

Florists ~ AWOW and Kaanapali Romance: J J J J J
A White Orchid Wedding provided my bouquet, centerpieces, and aisle flowers, and they were gorgeous! I love how my bouquet turned out and I’m a little sad that I didn’t get it preserved. I ordered the leis, BM corsages, and loose orchids for our hair and flower girl baskets from Kaanapali Romance, a florist located at the Royal Lahaina Resort. Scott the owner is so great and his partner made the beautiful wrist corsages for my BMs. They were so worth it. They can make virtually any floral/lei arrangement and their prices are so reasonable. I highly recommend them!

Hair & Make-Up ~ Jessica Waite and Jean Waite: J J J J J
Jessica was my savior of the day. If not for her, I wouldn’t have had a hair person (more on this below). She’s a really sweet person with a lot of talent. I never wear makeup so I was a bit anxious about getting it done, but I loved her work. My mom, aunt, and bridesmaids also had their makeup done and they were raving about the airbrush. Jean is Jessica’s mother-in-law and she does hair. She came with Jessica at the last minute when I told Jessica I needed a hair person. She did my hair exactly how I wanted it and it came out really nice and lasted all day. I’m so grateful for her.

Marci Guendel: L L L L L
If you look closely, that’s five angry faces. Now brides please note: this is neither a review of the quality of her work nor is it a judgment on her character. I am writing this review based on the way she has treated me, as a client, and my overall experience with her. A vendor canceling on me (and I’ve had two; one at the last minute) is not a big deal, especially if they offer a replacement. Vendors are people, too, and things do come up that are unexpected. However, in her case, I think I have the right to bitch. I booked Marci weeks in advance and had paid a deposit. I wrote her a note with a check indicating the date, time, and the resort name where I will be needing her services. Then I told her I will give her my room number when I check in, which will not be until the day before the wedding. (I booked a hotel close to our wedding site where my BMs and I can stay the night before). Unfortunately, I didn’t get to check in until very late at night because the food took too long at the Hula Grill (where we had our welcome dinner) and then I had to drive with my BMs from Lahaina to Wailea (an hour away). I called her as soon as I checked in (11:30pm) to give her my room no. and then she says with all the attitude in the world, “You’re calling me to tell me this now?!” Though extremely tired, I was calm and apologized to her for calling so late. I explained why I couldn’t call earlier, but she didn’t want to hear it. She went off on me about her not even knowing if our meeting was still a go and that she had made other commitments for the day, etc. WTF? I PAID THIS WOMAN A DEPOSIT, and with it the date, time (6:00am), and hotel name. She could’ve easily just come to our hotel at 6am as discussed, then asked the front desk for my room number!!! If she wanted to re-confirm at any point in time, she should’ve called me. She had my cellphone number. But I was still calm and apologized to her again, even though my voice started to crack. I guess it helped a little because she finally took down my room number and reconfirmed the details. Ok. Then she called back and left a message ~ “…I can’t do this…I don’t even know where this is (referring to my room number!)… It’s too much for me…I’m returning your deposit…bye!” At this point, I don’t know whether to cry and do nothing, call her back and beg, or call her back and curse her out. What she did to me was cruel because she knew perfectly well that I wouldn’t be able to book a hair person at 11:30pm, much less at 6:00am. I can’t even go to a salon to get my hair done. And this stress the night before my morning wedding. I decided not to call her back because I was extremely upset. Instead I called Jessica Waite, my makeup person, and left my room number in her voicemail. Then I called the hotel manager, told them about my situation, and asked if they can help me. They were so nice! They offered to shuttle me to the nearest hair salon, but they told me that they don’t open until 8:30am. That’s at least one plan. I can still make it to my 10am wedding. And then I remembered Jessica telling me that her mother-in-law does the type of hairdo I wanted to have. So I called her back and left her a message about my dilemma, asking her if she can bring her mom-in-law to do my hair. There was nothing else I could do. I had 3 hours of restless sleep. In the morning Jessica called me and she brought the happy news that Jean was coming! HOORAY! Now I don’t care if Marci does excellent job. What she did to me was mean and unprofessional. And she hasn’t given me my deposit back.

Morning venue ~ White Orchid Beach House: J J J J J
This place is beautiful beyond words. We could not imagine getting married anywhere else. The first time we saw it with our own eyes was 2 days prior to the wedding and I was near tears. We were also very lucky because the house just went through renovations but we paid the pre-renovation rate since I booked it last year. All our guests were amazed by this place, and some even thought they walked into the wrong wedding ~ they never expected us to pull something like this. So Maui-bound brides, if you’re not into the resort thing and just want a simple yet elegant affair, I highly recommend the WOBH.

Minister ~ Laki Kaahumanu: J J J J
Laki is really sweet, and he made our ceremony so special. He also let us add personal components to the ceremony and asked us if we wanted to say our own vows, which we did. My only misgiving is that he didn’t perform one of the things we added to the ceremony. No one missed it but it was still important to us.

Ceremony music ~ Ricardo Dioso: J J J J
We booked Vance Koenig to play during the ceremony but he ended up canceling and putting Ricardo in his stead. It was no big deal to us, and he was willing to learn one of the songs that we requested. The only problem was he didn’t have a PA system so the music was drowned by the wind.

Reception music ~ Kevin Brown and Co.: J J J J J
We hired a duo to play during the reception and they were really great! The slack key masters provided the perfect ambience for the brunch. They also came two hours early to setup and stayed until after the reception was over. My only complaint is that my one request, and that was to play Iz’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for our first dance, wasn’t done. Instead we got the regular version. Still, the dance was magical – “dreams really do come true.”

Brunch ~ Nutritious and Delicious: J J J J
I ate very little, but from what I heard, the food was excellent. It was light enough and perfect for lunch, and the buffet style provided options for my guests. The guava cheesecake was devoured and I’m pissed that I didn’t even get one. I gave them 4 out of 5 because they forgot one food item. No one missed it, but it was already paid for and we can’t get it reimbursed.

Cake ~ Maui Wedding Cakes: J J J J J
We LOVE LOVE LOVE our cake!!! It was beautiful and tasted so good. My guests still rave about it.

Favors ~ Auntie Nalani’s Cookies: J J J J J
Prompt delivery, great service, and really good presentation. Our guests love them!

Evening venue ~ Royal Lahaina Cottage: J J J J J
This is an awesome party house. The cottage was very clean and the backyard was big enough to hold our party, and the pool/jacuzzi was a nice addition. People can stay all night if they want to (unlike most venues that kick you out at 10pm). The resort management was very lenient about policies on vendors, food, music, décor, etc. We basically ordered a couple of food trays from the resort because the catering includes set up and breakdown of tables, linens, and chairs. But most of our dinner came courtesy of a family friend who is a local on Maui. Her mom prepared a lot of food and then they ordered some more from local sources. I thought we would have plenty of leftovers, but at the end of the evening everything was gone. My guests can EAT!

Bar ~ Stacey Smith/Bars Are Us: J J J J J J
Stacey’s my favorite vendor of the day so she gets an extra smile. She’s the best and kept everyone’s drinks coming. She even helped me improvise and setup décor for my centerpiece-less tables! She’s really awesome and I would recommend her any day.

Lights ~ Bright Ideas Maui: J J J J J
Mike provided the Chinese lanterns, lights around the lanai and bar, and luminaries around the pool. They had already set up by the time I got to the cottage. When I noticed that the front of the cottage might need some lighting, he went and did it right away. Then, upon Stacey’s suggestion, he put the extra luminaries on the tables to act as centerpieces. They turned out great!

Entertainment (hula and firedance) ~ Puoa Productions: J J J J J
I wanted to surprise my husband with a hula and Tahitian performance. He knows I used to dance when I was younger but had never seen me perform. I originally hired another production company to provide the music and hula dancers but they had to cancel at the last minute. This wasn’t a big deal since they referred me to another company, owned by George and Diane Puoa. Diane met with me the day before to go over the details of the performance. She’s really sweet and we instantly clicked. The night of, because I was trying to keep it a secret, I had my cousin keep my husband busy while I don my hula outfit. And then with the sound of Tahitian drums I came out with two hula dancers to perform the otea (yup, the fast hip dance). It took a lot of guts but I’m glad I did it. Then I did a solo hula to the Hawaiian Wedding Song in front of my dear husband. When our guests asked me to do an encore, I pulled my mom and sister (who taught me how to dance), and all three of us danced to Blue Hawaii. This was truly memorable since the last time the three of us performed was close to 20 years ago. Afterwards, all the guests jumped to learn the “Hukilau,” then the entertainment ended with a cool firedance. The performances (including my otea) during the evening were unrehearsed but everyone was amazed! The musicians, “Uncle Lui” and his son, were really sweet and easily blended with our group. We had so much fun!

Thanks for looking!!!
