We hosted our October 2009 wedding at the amazing Sunrise Villa in Cabrera, Dominican Republic. The bride and groom's immediate family and bridal party all stayed at the beachfront villa during the extended wedding weekend. Events kicked off on Thursday night at the villa, where the bride and groom hosted a hog roast and beach bonfire, complete with a mariachi band that kept guests on the sand dance floor well into the night!

Cabrera has little tourism infrastructure – far from the resort towns most people are familiar with – and the quaint, remote atmosphere added to the tropical mood. On Friday guests traveled to the nearby La Playa Grande - once rated one of the top ten most beautiful beaches by Conde Nast Travel - where guests frolicked in the light waves and dined on a fresh lobster lunch.

The rehearsal dinner was hosted at the nearby La Catalina Hotel, which sits quaintly atop a hill overlooking La Playa Grande, creating a beautiful backdrop for the poolside dinner. Guests were officially welcomed to the wedding weekend with toasts from the father of the bride and mother of the groom.

The wedding was held on the villa grounds, overlooking the stunning beach below. The ceremony was full of fabulous, island details. Amber Karson Events dressed up standard slip-covered chairs with a unique chair sash knot, adorned with a simple shell.

Custom place cards were set in “sand box” trays with shells and pearl accents, program fans were also functional during the humid tropical afternoon and menu cards continued the theme. Guests also received prepared detailed welcome packets and gift bags that were delivered in the guest rooms upon arrival. Invitations communicated the upscale beach vibe the bride and groom wanted throughout all the print pieces. The invitation included a real starfish – getting everyone excited early on for the tropical location!

Reception tables were adorned hand-painted sand dollars to create a custom table number. Simple touches like starfish set against blue linen created an upscale beach vibe for this destination wedding. Also, silverware with a bamboo pattern added a subtle tropical element to the table setting. The three tier island cake was decorated with orchids and sea shells to keep with the simple yet elegent beach theme.

The bride and groom, having the time of their life during their amazing wedding! The groom is an active duty Marine, currently stationed at Quantico. The bride, in a Modern Trousseau gown from Hitched in Washington, DC, works for the federal government. We met while he was stationed at the United States Embassy in Brussels, Belgium where she was a summer intern during graduate school. We were friends all summer, but knew the friendship had potential for more. Feeling spontaneous (and a little like Cinderella), Sandie accepted and returned to Belgium to attend the event (in a historic castle.) They had a wonderful time together, but their paths (and long distance) led them different ways soon after the ball. However, Sandie always kept a picture of Alan on her dresser and no guy she dated afterwards ever compared. Four plus years passed, and on the eve of an Iraq deployment, he tried contacting her minutes before boarding the bus. She missed the call, but reached him when he returned and the two reconnected - this time, for good.

I also was blessed to attend this wedding. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and the view overlooking the ocean, for their vows was breathtaking. Everyone at the Villa was great and the wedding/reception was very organized.
