In January of 2008, Anna Jimenez was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, a degenerative condition that affects the nervous system causing the loss of voluntary muscle movement. While reflecting on her life, Anna mentioned that she regretted not having a traditional wedding when she married Manuel (they were married in a simple courthouse ceremony 15 years ago). Her friends decided to help plan the wedding of her dreams so Anna and Manuel could renew their vows with their children, families, and friends present. Anna’s friend and bridesmaid, Dawn Thornton, began emailing wedding venues and vendors to see if anyone was willing to donate their products or services. She was amazed by the response! Shortly thereafter, The Gifted Wedding foundation was formed to give other deserving couples the opportunity to have their dream weddings when they otherwise couldn’t due to terminal illness, disability, or a unique financial situation.
