KATHLEEN HIGHT & MATT YOUELL JULY 16, 2004 Newlyweds for 1548 days! ABOUT KATHLEEN I'm a Sign Language Interpreter in Sacramento, CA. In May 2003 I graduated with an AA in Sign Language Interpreting. I work at the same college I trained at, and do free-lance interpreting. ABOUT MATT Matt is a Software Developer currently working as a contractor. This means the flexibility of doing new, interesting things. In his spare time Matt is interested in physics and writing his own software to sell. HOW WE MET We met at a MUPT in 1995. We both were chatting on a local BBS (this is pre-internet boom), but had yet to chat with each other. We actually met at the party before we started chatting online. Matt asked me on a date about a week after the party; we've been together ever since.

One of the things that attracted us to each other is the intellectually stimulating banter that we share online. We are living together now and still will chat over our network sometimes!
WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED July 9, 2002 HOW IT HAPPENED For the first time Matt was able to get 2 weeks off to spend at my family's cabin in Montana. One of the places that he loves to visit is a pass in the mountains (up a winding, unmaintained road) and the peak near it with a beautiful rock formation called Chimney Rock.

The first time he climbed up I had been sick and didn't have the strength to join him. This year we drove up to the pass and then he asked me to climb up with him. I was really taken aback that he hadn't mentioned climbing the peak before we drove up and I refused to go!

One week later we went back and this time I was prepared to go up there with him. Unfortunately, there was too much crumbling shale; all the falling rock and slipping was too much for me. I started to panic part of the way up and just had to stop. Luckily for me, I had climbed far enough!

I sat down where I was and Matt came and sat below me. He told me that he had a surprise for me and to close my eyes. I did, all the while not allowing myself to think marriage. I told myself that at the most it would be earrings, but it would probably be chocolate. Then he told me I could open my eyes and said, "I love you very much. Will you be my wife?"

I was stunned. After seven years together obviously the subject of marriage had come up, but I thought Matt was not ready for that yet (I had been since our first summer in Montana). I eventually regained the power of speech and said, "Yes!" We cried a little and hugged, then took photos of each other sitting there on the side of the mountain. It was the most beautiful and wonderful surprise I've ever received.
