Newlyweds for 850 days!
ABOUT STEPHANIE
Stephanie is entering her fourth and final year of her Ph.D. in education policy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee this fall. Her research interests focus on college access for African-American students. She is the middle child of Bud and Barbara Lee, traveling music evangelists, of Blue Springs, Missouri. Her older sister Melodye is married to Kenneth Moore, and they live in Atlanta, Georgia. Her younger brother DJ is one of the founding members of the nationally renowned band Scratch Track. Stephanie is a member of Strong Tower Bible Church in Franklin, Tennessee, where she serves in the worship ministry and on the women's ministry team. Being a graduate student does not allow for a lot of free time, but other than spending time with Tony she also enjoys good movies, good friends, and good conversation.
ABOUT TONY
Tony is a master barber at Kut and Kurl Barber Shop and Salon in Franklin, Tennessee. He is the youngest child of Herbert and Annie Steele of Detroit, Michigan. Tony also is a partner with his brother Herbert in the Franklin-based business Values R Us. They specialize in urban clothing and music. Tony has three children. Anthony, Jr. is a rising junior at Franklin High School, and one of the leading running backs on the football team. Kena will be in seventh grade in Detroit this fall, and Jahmal will be in the second grade also in Detroit. Tony enjoys having Kena and Jahmal with him each summer. Tony is also a member at Strong Tower Bible Church, and his hobbies include classic automobiles, pit bull terriers, and the Detroit Pistons.
HOW WE MET
Stephanie started going to one of the stylists at Kut and Kurl (where Tony works), and that is where she first saw Tony. Yet with being in a rigorous Ph.D. program, Stephanie was not looking to start any relationship. When Tony first tried to talk to Stephanie at the shop,he did so to no avail. It was not until Stephanie saw Tony at her church a few months later that she started really to take notice of him. He would try to talk to her after church, but she would only give brief answers before quickly ending the conversation. Yet to make a long story short, Tony's persistence and Stephanie's willingness to look beyond the surface proved to be a very good thing!
WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
April 16, 2006
HOW IT HAPPENED
On Easter Sunday at Strong Tower, Tony was adamant about sitting on the front row of the church. Normally Stephanie is all about sitting on the front row, but that particular Sunday, she was singing in the choir, so she preferred to sit on the other side of the church. Nonetheless, Tony insisted and Stephanie then agreed. While the pastor was making note of announcements, each announcement would flash up on the powerpoint screen. Finally, he said, "We have one more special announcement." And on the screen was the message, "Stephanie Lee, will you marry me?" Of course, the congregation gasped and cheered. (The rest is kinda a blur!). Tony did get on one knee (hence the need for the front row!), and Pastor Williamson shouted "wait, wait, wait!" and came and put the microphone in front of Tony. Tony was visibly shaking! And as his voiced cracked, "Will you...?" Stephanie's whispered back, "yes, yes, yes." It was a very happy day!
