The couple created a sign asking guests to carry lit candles as a symbol of unity. Doing so set a romantic, dramatic ambience.

Shannon is allergic to flowers. Instead, they decorated chairs at the ceremony with feathers, gold leaves, and branches.

The ceremony started at 8 p.m. in front of the Colony Club's floor-to-ceiling windows. Arrangements of feathers framed the space in front of one window to create an altar.

Guests read their table numbers from a giant chart displayed in an antique frame that was purchased at a local pawn shop.

Shannon and Steve alternated centerpieces between clusters of vintage oil lamps and bouquets of branches from the house where Shannon grew up. Her mom dried them and sprayed them with gold glitter.

Shannon and Steve named all the tables after Detroit landmarks. Vintage postcards of each one were included on the escort cards, 
along with the table number.

As favors (and New Year's Eve garb), guests got hats, tiaras, and blowers. Outside, they lit sparklers and took pictures.

When it came to setting the date, Shannon wanted December 31 (a night everyone’s in the mood to party) and Steve wanted July 31 (their dating anniversary). In the end, they flipped a coin to settle the score.

Shannon and Steve met when they were both members of the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity at Michigan State. The Bride Shannon McKenney, 27 and a graduate student at the U of M School of Public Health The Groom Steve Shubert, 27 and works at the Ann Arbor Preschool and Family Center The Date December 31 For their New Year's Eve nuptials, Shannon and Steve planned around three keywords: Detroit, vintage, and glamorous. They used a color palette of mostly black and gold, with punches of wintry cranberry.
