Diemmai and Huy exchanged vows in a Western wedding ceremony at the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park. Guests sat in a clearing near the teahouse, and white hanging lanterns and cherry blossom arrangements demarcated the altar.

In accordance with Buddhist tradition, Huy's relatives brought a roasted pig as well as gifts wrapped in red and gold cloth to the tea ceremony. They formed a line outside of Diemmai's mother's house, coming in one by one.

Diemmai and Huy's day began with a traditional Buddhist tea ceremony at the mother of the bride's home. "We transformed her living room into a ceremonial space, complete with an altar and photos of our ancestors," Diemmai says.

A few carefully selected motifs tied the Diemmai and Huy's celebration together: The Chinese character meaning "love" appeared throughout the wedding, cherry blossoms and orchids (the bride's favorite flowers) were also prominent, and a beautiful color scheme of pink and chocolate brown unified the elements. THE BRIDE Diemmai Nguyen THE GROOM Huy Pham THE DATE March 20 It's supposed to be good luck if it rains on your wedding day -- but rain, it turns out, brought on Diemmai's engagement. The 35-year-old registered nurse was visiting her then-boyfriend, Huy, in Philadelphia for their three-year anniversary. The couple planned to celebrate in New York City, but rain led to a decision to stay in bed a bit later. And they were right there when Huy, 32, a CPA, asked Diemmai to marry him. The couple soon began planning an elaborate celebration in the bride's hometown of Houston.
