“Jenn and I, along with the entire bridal party and several guests, most of whom traveled from out of state, stayed at the Havana Inn the weekend of the wedding. This allowed us to spend extra time with our friends and guests and made it so guests didn’t have to drive from location to location,” Chris says.

Following the ceremony, the space was transformed for the reception. “The candles at sunset along with the beautiful chandeliers gave the arbor area a very elegant feel,” Chris says.

Round tables were topped with white floral centerpieces, candles, menus, and favors, which picked up the blue and brown palette.

Just beside the arbor, the bar and dance floor were set up beneath the wooden lattice of a gazebo which was strung with lights. Everything was perfectly set for the evening, which began, appropriately enough, with the first dance song that Chris had chosen: Sara Evans’ “I Could Not Ask for More.”

Jenn decided on a slender V-neck chiffon gown with beading on the neckline by Maggie Sottero. Her four bridesmaids live all across the country and are all different sizes, so she decided to let them pick their own dress styles in chocolate brown chiffon. “I wanted my friends to have fun and feel comfortable on the wedding day,” the bride says.

Jenn and Chris chose a four-tiered cake with ivory buttercream frosting. A wide, brown satin ribbon was wrapped around each tier, and the bride’s parents’ 1963 cake topper finished it off. Jenn and Chris filled light blue boxes with truffles and tied them with brown ribbon. Inside the lid of each box was a card thanking guests for sharing in the wedding day.

Tapas-style passed hors d’oeuvres were followed by a dinner of grilled chicken in poblano sauce topped with pine nuts and served with basmati rice pilaf and grilled zucchini, yellow squash, and red peppers.

When Jenn and Chris planned a trip to Vegas for her birthday, Jenn jokingly told a few of her friends that they were going to come back married. Little did she know that Chris had already bought an engagement ring and was planning to propose that weekend. At the Bellagio, Chris told Jenn he’d figured out what to say when people asked about the trip. “I opened the ring box and told her, ‘We didn’t quite get married…. We just got engaged.’” The Bride Jennifer (Jenn) Zertuche, 34, clinical research project manager The Groom Christopher (Chris) McIlvain, 36, police sergeant The Date April 1 The couple initially thought they’d have a destination wedding but reconsidered when they realized many of their friends wouldn’t be able to make the trip. So Jenn and Chris researched sites and finally chose a place in Austin. Unfortunately, it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground! But while visiting San Antonio they stopped in at Jenn’s favorite hotel, the Havana Riverwalk Inn. “While walking through the arbor, Jenn stopped and said, ‘Wouldn’t this place be perfect for our wedding?’” Chris remembers. With just a few months to go until their April date, they readjusted their wedding plans and went full steam ahead for a San Antonio wedding.
