The reception tent, which overlooked a pond and wooded area, glowed with globe lights and candles as the sun went down, and simple white linens and chairs contributed to the homey, unfussy feel of the celebration.

Lisa’s bridesmaids wore strapless, matte satin, A-line dresses with banded trim from The Dessy Collection by After Six. “We chose a light green color to complement the outdoor garden feel of the wedding and the green and white house,” says Lisa. “It kept everything looking fresh and cool.”

The three-tier cake featured a layer of strawberry mousse and was decorated with colorful flowers. The sweetest treat of the night, though, was the groom’s cake Lisa had arranged as a surprise, featuring a character from the cartoon strip that Matt writes and illustrates.

“The band was one of the most important details to us,” Lisa explains, adding that the group she and Matt eventually chose, The Dave Ivaz Orchestra, was such a hit that the dance floor was crowded all night.

Lisa and her bridesmaids kicked off the wedding day with a relaxed, group makeup and hair session at a local salon. “We snacked on fruit and bagels and listened to a CD of my favorite music to set the tone for a great day and keep everyone from being too nervous,” Lisa says.

Crisp shades of green and white created a fresh atmosphere for Lisa and Matt's Saugatuck wedding. When Lisa Baumrucker (now 27 and an events manager for a non-profit organization) first met Matthew Hanneman (now 31 and an artist and media account executive), the friend who introduced them had actually planned to set up Lisa with a different guy. But “the chemistry was undeniable,” Lisa says, and the pair began dating three months later. Fast-forward one year: Matt had everything in place for a surprise proposal at Lisa’s family cottage on the lake just outside Saugatuck. “Ring in my pocket, my plan was to spend the day relaxing on the beach together, where I would propose while taking a romantic walk at sunset along the coast,” Matt explains. Afterward, friends were to join them for a bonfire on the beach with champagne and s’mores. But after a hot day collecting firewood, Lisa was ready to call it quits and head inside. “I was a nervous wreck trying to salvage the day and set the mood,” Matt remembers. “Finally, realizing the moment was never going to feel just right, I bent down on one knee and pulled out the ring. The Chicago couple married in their much-loved Saugatuck the following year.
