October 15th dawned sunny and 70 degrees. A Catholic ceremony was held at the magnificent Church of St. Francis Xavier on 16th Street. Margaret wore a custom-made, strapless ball gown with a bodice of Swarovski crystals.

The reception was held at Tribeca Rooftop, a huge penthouse with an industrial design, panoramic views of the Hudson River and a 65-foot skylight overlooking the dance floor.

A four-tier, square chocolate cake with white frosting was the perfect sweet ending to Margaret and Alex's fabulous repast.

Margaret had choreographed an elaborate routine to "World on A String," for the couple's first dance, complete with twists, turns and a little bit of comic acting. The guests "hooted and hollered" over the well-done performance, says Margaret.

The wedding of thespians Margaret Chmiel-Nichols and Alexander Alioto was like a Broadway show with several encores; every time the curtain came close to closing on that spectacular night, the crowd clamored for more. THE BRIDE Margaret Chmiel-Nichols, 25 THE GROOM Alexander Alioto, 26 THE DATE October 15 In fact, after a six-hour reception, all 150 guests headed to the 5,000-square-foot Presidential Suite at The Plaza, where they opened up cases of wine and gathered around the grand piano as the couple's theater friends sang. At 2 a.m., Alex's dad ordered breakfast, and 10 waiters arrived, carrying platters of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and muffins. An hour and a half later, when the newlyweds retired, the "backstage" party was still going strong. Margaret, a Chicago native, and Alex, a San Franciscan, were theater majors who met at a college sports bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Three years later, Alex proposed on the rooftop of Margaret's New York City apartment building. They celebrated with champagne and watched the sun set.
