Bridesmaids: Can I Replace My Maid of Honor?

Q: My maid of honor just dropped out of my wedding because she doesn't approve of my future husband. Assuming she won't change her mind, should I ask one of my bridesmaids to step in and replace her?

A: Honestly, it's a better idea to just do without a so-called maid of honor. "Promoting" one bridesmaid might send the wrong message to your other ladies. Also, in the event your maid of honor does step back up to the plate, at least you'll be the better person for not replacing her. Think of it this way: Lots of brides get married without having a maid of honor because they couldn't choose one bridesmaid over another.

Do You Have to Have a Maid of Honor?

I have three women in mind to ask to be my bridesmaids, but I'm unsure about whether I want to ask any of them to be my maid of honor, or whether I even want one to begin with. Do you have to have a maid of honor?
