How did they meet and get engaged?

John and Elizabeth met while attending law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There wasn't exactly a formal proposal. "He used to assume that we would get married," Elizabeth says. "I kept reminding him that he needed to actually ask me. I don't think that he ever did, we just knew we would get married eventually."

The wedding location?

The two decided to marry where they had met -- Chapel Hill. "We just drove around looking for pretty place to get married and happened upon the church," Elizabeth says.

What did they wear?

John and his groomsmen wore gray tuxes, while Elizabeth's bridesmaids wore apple green dresses. "A very obnoxious color, made of a kind of fabric that comes out of the washing machine dry," Elizabeth says. Elizabeth bought her gown -- a cap-sleeved, floor-length number -- at the last minute, after the gown she had originally ordered arrived four sizes too large.

The wedding day?

John and Elizabeth were married in a small, white clapboard church. They exchanged traditional vows and added in a few extra words about their marriage obligation to help the disadvantaged in their community. Following the ceremony, guests gathered at the Carolina Inn for the reception, planned by Elizabeth's mother and a family friend. Before the happy couple departed for the evening, they cut into a three-layered cake with a traditional bride and groom cake topper.

One of Elizabeth's favorite wedding memories?

"My dad and I stopped at a gas station before the wedding. I was all dressed up, and I remember he bought me a Sprite," she says.

The honeymoon?

The couple had a one-night honeymoon in Williamsburg, Virginia, before starting their jobs the following Monday. "John forgot the money for the trip, so it was a good thing that his mother had paid for it ahead of time," Elizabeth says.
