Melanie & Steve: A Garden of Wedding Delights in Dallas

by Allison Micarelli

It was a bit like a fairy tale. The day began early for the ladies who, after much primping, pampering, and indulging in a gourmet lunch, watched Melanie be transformed into a princess as she stepped into her perfect white ball gown. Meanwhile, Steven and his best pals headed to the golf course for a few rounds under the bright yellow sun bursting in the azure sky.

THE SCENE Ceremony: The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden; Reception: Hickory Street Studio

A FORMAL AFFAIR Before the sun went down, about 230 guests joined together in a formal garden at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden to witness the marriage of Melanie and Steve. Guests were seated with their backs to a large reflecting pool on the lawn overlooking White Rock Lake.

ZEN SOUNDS The soothing sounds of the nearby cascading waterfall were in perfect harmony with those of the James Sims Quintet (a local group made up of members from the Dallas Symphony). After the ceremony, Melanie and Steve asked everyone to linger for a group picture that the couple later framed for a visual guest book and also used as the cover for their wedding thank-you cards.

SCENIC DOWNTOWN The reception was held at the Hickory Street Studio, a renovated warehouse loft with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Dallas. The flicker of hundreds of tea lights created a warm and intimate scene, complementing tables adorned in palace vases with white calla lilies and bear grass or frosted hurricanes hand-painted by the groom's sister.

ALL THAT JAZZ The Bulletproof Brass, an eleven-piece band with horn section, started the evening with jazz standards during dinner, and later kicked things into high gear with popular R&B, big band, and funk. "They played everything from the Temptations to Michael Jackson to Van Morrison to Barry White," says Melanie, who chose "Unforgettable" for her first dance with Steve.

KICKED OUT! "We had the band and the loft booked until midnight-and we stayed on the dance floor until the very last minute!" As the hour hand approached twelve, the band played "New York, New York" and the guests all joined together in a kick line to close out the night.
