Inspired by their mutual love of travel, Montell popped the question during a summer trip to Chicago. He decided on a destination proposal to create a meaningful spot for the pair to celebrate their anniversary every year. After a romantic dinner, Emily and Montell took a waterfront stroll, and Montell got down on one knee with the city skyline as his backdrop. “The view was stunning, and he told me that he couldn't imagine spending his life without me," Emily says. “I was overwhelmed with happiness -- he had been my best friend for so long and I couldn't wait to start spending forever with him." Ryan told Chelsea he had to stop at a historic hotel in Washington, DC, to pick something up for a client after work, and asked if she wanted to join. “When we got to the hotel room, he kept pushing me to walk in the door before him, but I kept resisting since I thought it was the room of a total stranger!" Chelsea says. When she opened the door, Chelsea noticed flowers, champagne and a ring box on the table. “Ryan has always felt like a member of my family, so when he got on one knee, I was so excited to finally make it official!" 3. Sai & Jake

While Sai and Jake were hiking in Eno River State Park -- one of their favorite spots -- Sai couldn't help but look out at the water and think, “How can I subtly hint to Jake that it would be great one day to get engaged on a bridge?" At the same time, Jake was thinking, “If I get too nervous and fumble the ring, the drop down to the water looks manageable so I could jump in after it!" A half hour later, the couple crossed the bridge again on their way back and Sai noticed that Jake was lagging behind. “I turned around --apparently too soon! -- and poor Jake told me he had to tie his shoe as he got down on one knee," Sai says. “It was really beautiful with the water streaming past us, and I was so giddy that I couldn't stop smiling!" 4. Jacob & Sam

With both Jacob (right) and Sam working in the financial world, it didn't come as a surprise they were very practical and pragmatic when deciding to get engaged. The pair had just settled into their new apartment after more than four years of dating, while managing to keep their new dog alive, and Sam was starting a new job. "We were talking about combining bills and insurance when we both realized that we were doing all the married people stuff but without actually acknowledging it," Jacob says. "We decided that morning to get married, but neither of us remembers who -- if anyone -- asked whom!"

  5. Jessica & Jason

After dating for four years, Jason planned a weekend getaway for Jessica at Carolina Beach. While they were enjoying the sunset in the sand, Jessica started to joke around about Jason proposing, and then accidentally touched the ring box in his pocket. Moments later, Jessica was still caught off guard when Jason got down on one knee and popped the question. "Jason still managed to surprise me, and I'm so glad that he was able to keep it a secret," Jessica says. The ring: Diamonds Direct
