Frequently Asked Questions about Oval Engagement Rings

Have questions about the oval-cut? We've got answers. We've tapped two engagement ring experts to share their insights as you shop for your dream ring.

What is an oval engagement ring and what does it symbolize?

"An oval engagement ring is one where the primary stone being used is of an oval shape," says Eva Zuckerman, co-founder and creative director of Eva Fehren. "To me, an oval-shaped diamond is very romantic and symbolizes the circularity and fullness that one's life takes on when you've found your partner for life."

What should you look for in an oval stone engagement ring?

With this elongated cut, each oval stone looks slightly different. "Proportion is very important in an engagement ring with an oval stone," explains Zuckerman. "You want a stone that sits squarely in the center of your finger and that isn't too long—one that compliments the shape of your finger and doesn't overwhelm it."

Also, due to their specific shape, oval diamonds will always have a "bow tie" across the middle. But you should "avoid an obvious 'bow tie' in the stone," says Greg Kwiat, CEO of Kwiat and Fred Leighton. "A bowtie describes the visual effect where the diamond shows darkness across its center due to its angles and faceting," he adds. "Instead, you should look for a diamond that is bright and brilliant throughout."

Oval diamonds can span a range of carat sizes, from more modest 1-carat stones to 3-carat stunners. We've pulled some examples to give you an idea of what each carat size looks like (along with shoppable picks, of course).

How much does an oval engagement ring cost?

According to The Knot 2022 Jewelry and Engagement Study, the average cost of an engagement ring in 2022 remained at about $6,000. Like any other type of engagement ring style, the cost of an oval-cut diamond sparkler depends on a few factors, including the carat weight, type of metal and style of the setting. "The four C's—color, cut, clarity and carat weight are the cornerstones of pricing for all diamond rings. That said, the more ornate the setting and the more work it takes to build will affect the final price of the ring too," Zuckerman adds.

Additionally, "the intricacy of the ring design and the addition of other diamonds or gemstones on the band can also increase the cost," adds Kwiat. "Platinum is a premium metal that might be slightly more expensive than white gold, but it is well worth the cost when it comes to long-term durability and beauty."

Natural stones (mined from beneath the surface of the earth) cost more than lab-created diamonds (grown in a laboratory). But you also have diamond alternatives (like moissanite and cubic zirconia) and non-diamond engagement rings (like colored gemstones) that are more affordable.
