Attention, 'Fourth Wing' Fans: Rebecca Yarros' Real-Life Love Story Is Better Than Her Books
You know how the saying goes: "A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead." But Rebecca Yarros without her husband, Jason Yarros? Well, we might never have gotten Fourth Wing if they didn't meet. (Dramatic, much? Maybe, but you get the point.) Any book lover is likely familiar with Yarros' wildly-popular romantasty series, which has taken BookTok by storm. With the third installment, Onyx Storm, set to release on January 21, 2025, the author is back in the spotlight—and readers can't help but wonder, who is Rebecca Yarros' husband?
The New York Times bestseller often opens up about her longtime love on social media, even saying once that there's "a little bit of [him] in every hero I write." (Translation: We can thank Jason for Xaden Riorson.) Beyond her spicy Empyrean fantasy books, which are set to be turned into a TV series by Amazon MGM Studios, Yarros has also penned a few contemporary romances too. We are, of course, happy to report that her real-life love story is greater than any novel. (She says so herself!) Who is Rebecca Yarros' Husband, Jason Yarros?
Rebecca Yarros is married to Jason Yarros. The military veteran served in the United States Army for over two decades and formally retired in 2019. Yarros opened up about his career in 2024, writing, "On the anniversary of your last flight, the only words I have are thank you. Not just for the 22 years you spent in a uniform, but the year you chose to walk away from the second love of your life—flying the AH64."
She added that his dedication to their marriage (and their six children) has allowed her to pursue her writing career in the years following his retirement. "None of this wild existence we call life right now would have been possible without you being an equal partner and giving me equal time in my own career, giving the kids all of you and ending the see-you-laters. You are the epitome of the word, 'teammate,'" she concluded, adding, "I've missed you flying over the house, but you gave up the sky so the rest of us could fly, and I'll forever be grateful!"
Now that he's no longer deployed, Jason Yarros spends his time traveling the world, raising his children, and reading his wife's books before they hit shelves. (Yes, we're jealous.)
How Jason and Rebecca Yarros Met
Fact: You can't write a meet-cute better than the one Rebecca and Jason Yarros share. The pair met in a karaoke bar in April 2000, and instantly knew they were end-game. "24 years ago, this green-eyed boy asked if I wanted to sing with him at a karaoke bar," Yarros wrote on Instagram in honor of their anniversary in 2024. "The next day (May 1st) he had his wisdom teeth taken out and I took him a pint of his favorite ice cream. We've been us ever since. He's my best friend, my shelter from the storm, and the love of my life. Here's to finding your soulmate at 19!"
Jason and Rebecca Yarros' Wedding Photos & Details
Rebecca Yarros married her husband, Jason, on May 18, 2002, just over two years after they first met. The bride wore a strapless wedding dress for the occasion, which she paired with a voluminous veil, a glittering tiara, and a pastel bouquet. In honor of their milestone 22nd wedding anniversary in 2024, Yarros opened up about their wedding day, addressing their whirlwind romance.
"22 years ago people jokingly took bets at our wedding. At least I hope it was jokingly… 😬," she wrote. "We were too young, too different, too reckless. You name it, we heard it. Tonight we celebrated 22 years of marriage with dinner in Paris." In a previous anniversary post, the author noted all the things they weathered throughout their marriage, including deployments, book releases, nearly ten moves, and, of course, the births of their six children.
Looking back, Yarros confirmed that their relationship has only gotten stronger over the years: "I can't imagine laughing through life with anyone else. Here's to proving everyone wrong for another 22 or so."
All About Jason and Rebecca Yarros' Kids
Rebecca Yarros and her husband are the proud parents of six children together. Per her official author bio, she jokes that she's "currently surviving the teenage years with two of her four hockey-playing sons." Yarros and her husband also fostered—then adopted—their youngest daughter, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum. In an interview, Yarros said that experience "changed the way she thinks today," adding, "There are so many kids out there that need help."
With some of her children currently in college, Yarros often uses her cross-country book tours to visit them. "When my publisher asked how I wanted to release Iron Flame, I told her exactly how we'd released Fourth Wing...in my jammies, lol! But then she reminded me that if we toured, I'd get to see two of my kiddos, who are at college on different coasts," she wrote on Instagram in November 2023. "My favorite part of this tour has been this right here. From New York City to Los Angeles, I was able to hug my boys. Because at the end of the day, being a writer is amazing. But my first job is their mother. And I love every minute of it."

Onyx Storm
If you're here, I'm going to assume you've already read (and loved) Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. The third installment of the Empyrean series, Onyx Storm, drops on January 21, 2025, and picks up after that *massive* cliffhanger at the end of book two. I'll keep it simple: There's a reason Fourth Wing sold over two million copies worldwide. Readers can't get enough of this gripping story, so don't spend any more time wondering what all the fuss is about. It's worth it.
Variation
Sure, it seems like everyone on the planet has been talking about Fourth Wing for the last two years. But did you know Yarros has been churning out other books—sans dragons—in between her Empyrean releases? Her most recent (besides Onyx Storm, of course) is Variation, a contemporary romance about a dancer who returns home after an injury. While she's recovering in her family's beloved summer house, she crosses paths with a Coast Guard rescue swimmer from her past—and in the process, she unearths years of family secrets that threaten everything she thought she knew about her former flame. With a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads, this could be the perfect book to devour on your honeymoon.
The Things We Leave Unfinished
You might recognize this cover as another BookTok favorite. In this dual-timeline historical romance, recently divorced Georgia Stanton leaves her New York life behind and moves back into her late great-grandmother's Colorado escape. She's none too pleased to find romance author Noah Harrison on the property, who's been tapped to finish her grandmother's final novel. As they comb through the letters that inspired the World War II story, they discover that it was unfinished for a reason—because it was inspired by her own tragic relationship with a pilot. Even as their connection deepens, Georgia must decide if she's willing to learn from her grandmother's mistakes or go where her heart leads her.
In the Likely Event
Rebecca Yarros herself has said that her husband is the reason she keeps writing pilot romances, and In the Likely Event is proof. If you love juicy tales with incredible meet-cutes and chance encounters, allow us to make a case for this one. When Izzy Astor boards a plane to get home for the holidays, she certainly never expects her seatmate, Nate Phelan, to be her soul mate. She's instantly charmed by his dashing looks and their undeniable connection. But when their plane goes down just seconds after takeoff, their lives change forever.
New careers take them on separate paths, and each time they find each other through unexpected interactions over the years, it never feels like the right time…that is, until Nate finds himself protecting Izzy's life during an unexpected reunion in Afghanistan. With over 43,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this is one Rebecca Yarros romance book you don't want to miss.
