Wedding Reception Etiquette: Must We Divide Reception Guests?

Q:

My mom and I are in a huge disagreement over the issue of wedding reception seating. I want to have my family and friends sitting at the same tables, and my fiance's friends and family sitting at the same tables, but I want to intermingle the tables throughout the room. In other words, I don't want to have a "bride's side" and "groom's side" at the wedding reception. What do you think?

A:

You're in the right on this one -- why have a bride's side and a groom's side anyway? You're getting married -- everyone will be family. As for your mother's concern that you're "asking for trouble," simply point out that you're not putting the two "sides" together at the same tables -- you're just interspersing the reception tables. (Not that it would be wrong to do that -- many couples do, giving their wedding guests a chance to get introduced).
