Wedding Gifts: Returning Wedding Gifts?

If one has an engagement party and received gifts and the couple breaks up, do the wedding gifts and wedding money have to be returned?

Technically they do, yes. This is true of shower and wedding gifts as well: If the couple calls off the wedding, any money and gifts should be sent back to the givers. If it's a long time since the engagement party (six months or more), or you really feel weird about sending things back and you don't think the guest will expect or want it back, use your judgment. Don't worry about gifts you've already used; they don't have to go back. It is kind of a double-edged sword. If you get left at the altar, it might be nice to think about taking solace in all your presents. But really, you wouldn't want gifts that represent a union that's no longer going to happen, right?

Wedding Gifts: Do I Have to Buy a Wedding Gift and a Shower Gift?

I always thought that if you were invited to the bridal shower and brought a gift that you were then not expected to buy a wedding gift, but a friend recently told me she thinks this isn't the case. Who's right?
