Persistence paid off for John, who had to ask Su out several times after meeting her through his older sister. Su finally agreed to a date, and the pair went to see a horror movie together. “I thought it would be too crazy to go out since we had only known each other for a week, so I kept saying no," she admits. Her hesitancy clearly subsided, because just seven months into dating, Su and John woke up one morning and decided to marry at a courthouse—no engagement ring necessary. “I'm still waiting for my husband to propose!" she says.

  2. Jean & James

After six years together, James concocted a plan to propose to Jean while on her family's annual vacation in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The only problem? Jean's sister's boyfriend also had plans to propose that same weekend! With the help of Jean's brother, the men decided to propose on different parts of the beach without overshadowing the other. One evening during a sunset walk, James got down on one knee and asked Jean to make him the luckiest man alive. “I said 'absolutely' before he even got all of the words out," she says. The ring: I. While on a trip to Iceland with friends to celebrate the New Year, Michael (right) jumped at the opportunity to pop the question to Alan after six and a half years together. “The trip to Iceland proved to be the perfect backdrop," Michael says. On New Year's Eve, the couple headed to the plaza in front of the Hallgrímskirkja (Iceland's largest church) to watch the fireworks. At the stroke of midnight, Michael turned to Alan and asked if they should make it official. “We love that we got to kick off the year in an amazing way," the couple says. The ring: W.R. On a chilly Valentine's Day a year and a half into dating, Evan planned a special outing for Jessica, which included a visit to the Capitol. “The wind was unbearably cold, and I remember thinking, 'What is so important that we have to be outside right now?' " Jessica says. As they got to the top of the Capitol steps, Evan reached into his coat, went down on one knee, and asked Jessica to marry him. “The Capitol has always been a special place for us," she says. “It was the site of our first date, first kiss—and now it's the place where he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him." After meeting at a surf shop and dating for more than five years, Rocky gave Brittany quite the Christmas gift— a custom pair of Nike shoes in her alma mater's colors. “I looked at the tongue of the shoes, saw my future initials and my heart stopped," Brittany says. When she looked up, Rocky was holding a ring that he'd secretly stashed underneath the couch. “Her dad and I were the only ones who knew," he says of the surprise, which he managed to capture on a hidden GoPro. “I'm so grateful to have the footage so we can watch it for years to come."
