Maid of Honor: Should She Give a Wedding Speech?

by The Knot
Q:

I'm the maid of honor at a friend's wedding, and I'm wondering if it's customary to give a wedding toast at the wedding reception. Should I be prepared just in case?

A:

It's definitely a trend for the bride's honor attendant to join her male counterpart in toasting the newlyweds. While it's not mandatory, it's a wonderful idea. Why should the best man speak while the maid (or matron) of honor remains silent? If you want to make a toast, it's always a good idea to prepare what you'll say in advance. Think about things like your relationship to the bride, some of the highlights of your friendship, the first time she told you about her fiance. Then take your place on the wedding video -- and take a stand for honor attendants everywhere!
