The First Look
The Eisenhower House at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island is a gorgeous estate that was once the summer White House of the former president. This sprawling Victorian home has stunning views of Narragansett Bay and the Newport Bridge, making a picture-ideal backdrop for weddings and receptions for couples looking for an elegant, historical venue on the water.
Built in 1873, Eisenhower House was the commandant’s residence at Fort Adams, an important fort built to protect the bay and Newport Harbor from a naval invasion. The state of Rhode Island now owns the property and rents it for events. Eisenhower House is newly renovated, but retains its stately presence as a former president’s New England getaway. Couples looking for a historic venue will find Eisenhower House to be a great choice with both indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used for their wedding celebration.
Couples can make use of two rooms located upstairs for bridal party and groomsmen preparations before the ceremony. Each of these beautifully-decorated rooms has a private bathroom. The furnishings throughout the home are tasteful and appropriate for the time period. There are many areas for staging photos, including a lovely staircase, fireplace, sunny parlors with hardwood flooring and a wrap-around porch.
Indoor events of up to 85 guests can be accommodated for a standing reception or for a sit-down dinner in separate rooms of the house. Seated receptions in one room can accommodate 45-50 guests. Anything above 85 guests requires the use of a tent out on the lawn.
The lush green lawn of the Eisenhower House faces the bay and looks west, making sunset ceremonies and receptions absolutely gorgeous. The tents used for large groups make it possible to take advantage of the Eisenhower House’s prime location on the water all year long. Events outdoors can accommodate large guest lists of more than 300 people.
What You Should Know
Couples planning large events at Eisenhower House should be aware that parties of 300 or more require you to hire firefighters who are paid on an hourly basis. The Chief of the Newport Fire Department determines how many personnel would be needed for a particular event.
One of the many benefits of choosing Eisenhower House is that each event has the venue exclusively for that day—no other weddings or events happen on your day. The rental allows access to the house and grounds. Five restrooms are available for guests, including three on the first floor of the house and two in the carriage house that is near the lawn area.
A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your date with Eisenhower House and is due with the signed contract. The balance for the rental fee is due 60 days before your event. Eisenhower House does not accept credit cards for payment; checks must be made payable to the state of Rhode Island.
The management of Eisenhower House is focused on helping each couple that chooses their venue to create the most memorable wedding day possible with the least amount of stress. Beautiful setting and easy to work with!Reviewed on 7/17/2015 Sarah N
The Eisenhower House provided the perfect setting and back drop for our wedding. The house, which was originally built for the commandant of Fort Adams, used by President Eisenhower as his summer White House and is now owned by the state, was renovated this year and is absolutely stunning! The classic vintage feeling is paired with a true elegance. Our guests adored the property and all that it offered. We had the wedding on the lawn underneath a tent, overlooking the Narragansett Bay and the Newport Bridge, providing one of the most stunning views of Newport. The house provided a lively, warm atmosphere during our cocktail hour and a place for quiet respite during our reception. We also loved that there were bathroom facilities for all our guests on the property and we didn't need to bring in mobile bathrooms. I loved visiting the house prior to our wedding and taking in new details each time - from the carved etchings on the stairwell to the original light fixture in the bridal suite. The house is simply gorgeous. However, one of our most positive experiences with the Eisenhower House was working with the site manager, Joan. She was helpful and supportive. She was always available to answer our questions and give guidance where we needed it. She worked with us to make sure that we had our special day exactly the way that we wanted it. Any bride and groom who books here is sure to have a very special and memorable wedding. My husband and I love the Eisenhower House and look forward to having it forever in our memories of this momentous day in our lives!
What is not to love about this place?! It's gorgeous. Joan who runs the house was so easy to work with and accommodating. We were battling a hurricane leading up to the wedding and they did everything to help us prepare (and ease the nerves). Our wedding was after the renovation and the inside of the house is just pristine (I never saw it pre renovation). If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you Joan and everyone at the Eisenhower House for giving us the best party and memories!

We used the house instead of setting up a tent and it was so beautiful. The house has a beautiful wrap around porch where the bar and band set up but there was still tons of room for cocktail tables. We set up the dinner table in 3 different rooms inside and the entire front room was open for the cake and dancing. You can't compete with the view. It also faces west so we had a beautiful sunset over the water looking toward Jamestown.;The only thing I didn't like is the power lines above the hedge, which I did notice when we were at Eisenhower House during the planning, but honestly did not even think about during the wedding.
