5 weeks before my wedding day my dress arrived to me in Tuscaloosa, Alabama via fedex. After work that day, around 5 pm, I ran up to my bedroom and for the first time tried on my very own wedding dress for myself.
It did not fit. At. All.
My d...ress was a Hailey Paige beaded A-line gown (called Roxanne if you’d like photo reference.)The dress was probably about 2 feet too long. The top is intricate beading and the bottom layered silk, organza and tuille. The back of the dress zipped to the nape of my back, but had two gorgeous beaded straps that didn’t even come remotely close to clasping across my back. It was disastrous. I work 6 days a week, had no idea how I would get to the closest decent shop (presumably in Birmingham) for fitting, alterations and another fitting within THE FIVE WEEKS before I actually left town for my wedding. I was truly in melt down mode.
So I googled boutiques and alteration stores in town and came across Evanna’s (and trusted it would be nice because it was in Northport and called them.)
5:45 pm on a dark, raining Thursday night: “Of course we have time tonight! Come right in we will see what we can do.”
From here, I can’t say enough about how I actually feel Eva and Anna were a part of my wedding. They took me in. They couldn’t have said enough nice things about my dress (which though, ill fitting, was beautiful) and even though they do not sell this dress or designer in store, they were happy to do the alterations for me. I really would not have been able to tell you that my dress was organza and tuille before they did the alterations on it. They told me how uniquely difficult the fabric is, but all the same Anna was on her hands and knees circling me and pinning my hem.
The trickiest part was of course the beading. The straps were too short, and there were two of them. The dress was lined with similar beads, but the top was filled in with different ones. We talked about just taking the bottom strap off and attaching it to the top strap to make it cohesive. Fine, not extravagant, put doable for simple people. They would see what they could do.
I made an appointment to be back in 4 weeks. Cutting close to my departure date for my wedding, but they assured me that whatever needed adjusting after my next fitting they would prioritize and do in the days before I had to leave. I left the dress, thanked them, and rested so much easier. The whole experience made me feel happy. They were smart, helpful, kind, interested in my love story, funny, just overall wonderful people to talk to and be around. You come across alot of people when you are planning a wedding that are just trying to get money from you. Eva and Anna are doing a job they love and genuinely enjoy making the experience better for you. They were hands-down the best people I worked with during my entire wedding preparation experience.
Flash forward a month, my friend Tricia and I go for my final fitting. Does the dress fit perfect? Yes. Did they do some sort of wizard magic to maintain both intricately beaded straps? Yes. Did they let us bring champagne and spend too long chatting about life, love, marriage and the crimson tide? Yes. Did Eva insist that I take one of her gorgeous hand-made garters as a gift and my something blue? Yes. I really just can’t say enough about these wonderful women and their perfect shop!
My only regret is that I didn’t start off dress shopping with them in the first place. Do yourself a favor and go here!
