The Inside Scoop

FROM THE KNOT EDITORS

The First Look

Located in New Haven, Connecticut, the ROÌA Restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, sits directly inside the historic Taft Hotel. This historic building lends itself to amazing first-look photographs. The facility was built back in 1912 and has over 100 years of wedding receptions and other events under its belt. Although you are not given an event coordinator to assist with planning your big event, the owners of the property do everything they can to make the day memorable. There are three options within this elegant building for hosting your special event.

Perfect for rehearsal dinners, the dining room is made up of one large oval table. A total of 12 friends and family members can fit around the table. The room is warm and cozy, and conversation flows evenly around the table. The high ceilings also make the spot feel open and spacious.

Overlooking the main dining area, the balcony has enough space to accommodate as many as 110 guests. To make the room more private, it can be curtained off. The other option is to leave the room space open to include the cocktail lounge and the bar for easy access to drinks.

Alternatively, you may take away all limitations and reserve the entire facility for your special day. You are able to invite 175 seated guests with a dance floor and 200 without. If you're just interested in a cocktail style reception then 230 guests can fit comfortably. With a sophisticated look and tasteful decorations, you just can't beat the ROIA Restaurant for your reception.

What You Should Know

The staff at the ROIA Restaurant goes above and beyond for their clients. Couples are welcome to drop off party favors or gift bags, decorations and guest books ahead of time. While they are saying their 'I Do's' at a nearby chapel, the staff gets everything set up and organized. The owners of the restaurant are also happy to make any recommendations for additional vendors, such as a videographer, photographer or disc jockey.

The culinary team customizes menus to fit your tastes using locally sourced ingredients. This includes creating a menu that is filled with gluten-free dishes or vegan meals. If someone in your wedding party has a food allergy, the owners handle the menu with care and to-be-weds are not disappointed. To start off, guests are served a host of hors d'oeuvres such as grilled octopus, saffron arancini with garlic aioli and shaved fennel. These items whet your appetite and get you hungry for the main entree. Options for the dinner meal include homemade fettuccine with clams, steak frites and raw local fluke.

Overall, it creates a sense of elegance and class that you are not getting at your typical reception hall (I am looking at you Union League Cafe and Lawn Club). 2) The people! What better way is there to get married than have a married couple lead you through the process? Meera and Avi (director of operations and head chef) are perfect together in both their personal and professional lives. Roìa is their project together and when you come to them to have your wedding there, they are fully and personally invested in making your wedding perfect. We immediately felt that we could trust them--and that feeling of trust is something that is so important, but is often discounted or goes unmentioned. I say this because our comfort with them really carried through to the whole experience. Before our wedding, I kept being asked by friends, family, and co-workers if I was stressed, and I had to admit (with some embarrassment) that no, I wasn't! I knew that they were going to make sure that every detail was as we wanted it from the food (which got many compliments from guests) and drinks to the menu design and flowers. They fulfilled 100% and their wait staff was professional and did an excellent job. The sum: we had an amazing wedding at Roìa, the planning process was smooth and easy, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.
