The Inside Scoop
FROM THE KNOT EDITORS
The First Look
Main Chapel. This elegant venue offers two-level seating and can sit up to 1,000 witnesses. The altar serves as the chapel's interior focal point, standing in a grand archway before the pews and balconies. A single-step dais elevates the couple as they exchange vows, and is flanked by a series of ornate Roman columns on both sides. There's a pipe organ in the chapel, which can give a ceremony's music a dramatic kick. The chapel's cream-colored walls bring a warm glow to the space, providing a sense of intimacy for both large and small ceremonies alike.
Wedding Grounds. Red brick walls, manicured gardens and lavish lawns surround the area immediately outside of the Main Chapel. Once the couple has said "I do," the wedding party and guests can congregate outside for photographs and mingle before the reception.
Garden Chapel. For a rustic and cozy feeling, this brick chapel provides a ceremony with unassuming elegance. Classical arched windows line the walls and add a touch of brightness to the room, which can seat up to 95 guests. The vaulted ceilings are lined with dark wooden beams, and the altar is subtle, yet serene.
Grand Ballroom. With complete banquet services and facilities, the Grand Ballroom is ideal for large receptions of up to 430 guests.
The Colony Ballroom is similar to the Grand Ballroom with banquet services and professional digital sound, film and video projection. It seats up to 370 guests.
The Atrium is ideal for medium-sized wedding receptions, seating 200 guests. The wide area with a glass domed ceiling provides beautiful natural light, which is best for a daytime event.
Prince George's Room. For small gatherings of 100 people or less, Prince George's Room is a classic on-campus event space. The cream walls and hardwood floors are a great starting point for any kind of decor, and the room is fitted for a projector screen.
What You Should Know
Full hair styling and makeup sessions are not permitted in the bridal suite. Only touch-ups and dressing are allowed in the suite.
No alcohol is permitted on the chapel grounds. The only food that is allowed is light refreshments, which must be served in either the Main Chapel's lounge or in the Garden Chapel's conference room. Reception spaces allow for a full banquet-style, buffet or stationed dining. The University of Maryland is non-smoking.
The couples are responsible for cleaning up any personal items that may be used in the chapels. It's encouraged that the bride and groom designate a guest or two to clean up after the ceremony. The Main Chapel may be reserved for two hours and 45 minutes, while the Garden Chapel can be booked for two and a half hours. This rental time includes setup and cleanup. Couples are not allowed to book both chapels at the same time and any alteration of the ceremony timing must be approved in advance by the chapel office.
Reception spaces can be customized to fit the needs of the bride and groom, but no additional services are provided by the university. On the plus side, you can use all the outside vendors you want.
A few of the extra perks of having a ceremony on the chapel grounds include:
- Complimentary bridal suite
- Discounts for chapel and ballroom rentals if booked simultaneously
- Special discounts for small ceremonies of up to 15 guests

Main chapel is beautiful. A little pricey but worth it. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. Perfect place for our wedding.

It's the perfect place for couples graduated form University of Maryland. The place is gorgeous. It's an excellent choice that was made.
Greetings! My husband and I were recently married in the Main chapel. When I first saw the venue, it was love at first sight!!!! It is gorgeous!! The staff are very friendly and accommodating. We had to change our wedding date a couple of times and the management was very understanding. They did not charge us a fee, even though it is policy to do so. All of our guests were in awe of the architectural design and high ceilings, in the chapel. Thank you UMD for allowing us to utilize you facility! -M. Nsiah-Bennett
I got married at the Memorial Chapel just a month ago and it was a great experience. The Chapel is beautiful, every staff member I encountered was a pleasure to deal with, very responsive and attentive from the day I showed interest until my actual wedding day. They made sure that I had everything I needed and wanted to make my wedding awesome. You definitely WON'T be disappointed in choosing this venue... exceptional staff and beautiful location.
The Memorial Chapel is a great place to have your wedding. The main chapel is absolutely beautiful., brick architecture, white pews, and beautiful gardens. Melva Coles was very helpful and knowledgeable and made sure things ran smoothly. (There is also a smaller garden chapel for small weddings, mostly wood finishings.) The only disadvantages are that you cannot plug anything into their sound system and if you have more than 300 guests you have to pay for two time slots. The price is to rent one time slot can run you between $500-1000 depending on the time of year and there is a small discount the bride or groom is an an alumnus of UMD. Overall, I would recommend it.

i LOVED THE CHAPEL FROM THE BEGINNING. We used the main chapel for our wedding. We didn't need to decorate it. The staff was okay. Didn't see them much during the rehearsal or the wedding. But they did keep in touch.
