From the start, April Gruver was not the warmest person. When meeting with her for my cake tasting, she seemed uptight and had no sense of humor. It didn't bother me at the time, since I really liked the cupcakes we tried and she seemed to have... some good ideas for my wedding cake/cupcake design.
Also, getting her to respond was very difficult. I was planning an out-of-town wedding, which made emails and phone calls the only way to get in touch with people. After leaving messages and emailing her several times, I never got a response. The only way I was able to get in touch with her was if I went to the actual bakery (which was difficult, being from Nashville). Even then, she made no attempt to connect with me about my order. She seemed rushed and gave me attitude. Not great for someone I'm about to give hundreds of dollars to. I handed her my cake toppers that day and told her my guest list was going to be significantly smaller. I could see this upset her, but she was in a hurry so we didn't talk much about it. Later on, she seemed surprised that my guest list was much smaller, and made me pay for 100 cupcakes, when I really only needed 80.
But the worst part of the whole thing was that Ms. Gruver forgot our cake toppers, which were very important to me and my husband. Now, I understand that lots of people involved in the wedding business are in no way interested in those who have upcoming nuptials, or the little details they've been counting on. However, when lots of money is involved, they should at least PRETEND to be interested, and to REMEMBER those important details. You know, umm maybe write it down or something.
I regret going with Vanilla Pastry Studio and I advise against those who are thinking about using them for their wedding. There are many other bakeries (that I'm sure are awesome) in the Pittsburgh area to choose from...ones that have been around a lot longer, too. Unfortunately, I didn't take the time to explore, and this is what I got.
I give credit where credit is due: Her cupcakes were very good. Guests really liked them and the mini cake was beautiful. But her attitude and carelessness ruined that sweetness for me and put a very bad taste in my mouth. It was a big disappointment, but luckily it was the only disappointment at my wedding.
We were also lucky she didn't lose the cake toppers, which were handmade and expensive. My brother went to the bakery to retrieve them. She wasn't there (of course) so he didn't have words with her, but he let the employee there know about April's mistake.
Had she called me to apologize, this would be a much nicer review. But I got NO call, NO e-mail to say she was sorry. What kind of business owner doesn't do that when they screw up? I'm just hoping this review will give her NO wedding business.
