A Colorful DIY Wedding at St. John's Church in Kula, Hawaii
Amelia Nelson (30 and a dancer) and Toby Couture (30 and a musician) didn’t have to splurge to plan the wedding of their dreams. Fastened with every color of the rainbow, the DIY decor, inspired by the romance of old Mexico, included handmade colored-paper centerpieces, string decor and aisle accents. Neither Amelia nor Toby is Mexican, but they have several close friends who are, and the artistic couple knew a Mexican fiesta–inspired wedding would mean incredible food, vibrant colors and fabulous dancing. “I always associated [Mexican fiestas] with celebrations, music and a vibrant sense of life and family. This is what we wanted our wedding to have,” Amelia says. Mexican–themed elements included bold serape tablecloths, Amelia’s mantilla-style veil (“A friend of ours described my look as Frida Kahlo meets Audrey Hepburn,” the bride says), a rainbow pinata, bottles of tequila with monogrammed shot glasses (the party downed shots instead of a champagne toast) and a margarita cake. The couple married in a traditional Episcopalian ceremony at St. John's Church in Kula, Hawaii. The festivities commenced in the churchyard and continued late into the torch- and sparkler-lit night. —Maggie Seaver
