A Black and Gold New Year's Eve Wedding at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, Minnesota

Jillian Swanson (31 and an elementary school teacher) and Sally Simpson (29 and a growth strategist) met over drinks at a small bar in Texas but wanted their wedding to be 100-percent Minnesota. "Our friends and family are really spread out all over the US, and we wanted everyone to be able to experience what Minnesota winters have to offer," Jillian says. What better than the elegant, rustic, quintessential "up north" Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, Minnesota? And what better time of year than New Year's Eve? Guests were able to stay in lodging on the Grand View property, while celebrating the wedding and holiday together over the weekend. "Two hours north of the Twin Cities, it was a mini destination for us, and a fun adventure for our out-of-state guests," Jillian says. The brides worked with a wedding planner to incorporate New Year's Eve into their wedding theme, using classic black, gold and silver accents, plenty of sparkles, and a request for guests to dress in "formal and festive attire," with the wedding party in classic black. They didn't want the lodge to feel too Christmasy, so the brides layered greenery with hanging amaranthus for a more woodsy and whimsical vibe, then added a number of candles, gold chiavari chairs and garden roses, ranunculus, raspberries (in Sally’s bouquet), kiwifruit vine (in the bridesmaid bouquets) and peonies for a dramatic touch. An open bar and band kept the dance floor packed, with New Year's Eve props making an appearance shortly before midnight. A New Year's Eve fireworks show, to celebrate Grand View's 100th anniversary, was the perfect way to end the night. —Chrissy Sorenson
