A Bohemian Mountain Wedding at Glen-Ella Springs Inn in Clarkesville, Georgia

The wedding of Kelley Haughton (a catering sales manager at Bold American Events) and Dan Bowden (a financial analyst at UPS) was over a decade in the making. The couple met in middle school in Duluth, Georgia, and started dating at age 15. Their nuptials took place under a tree at Glen-Ella Springs, an inn, restaurant and event space in Clarkesville, Georgia. Located about two hours from Atlanta, it was the site of the entire wedding weekend’s festivities, allowing guests to stay on-site and experience fall in the mountains. They exchanged rings passed down from family members. Dan’s great-aunt passed on her ring to his mother, which then went to Kelley. Wedding bands were made of rose gold, including an additional band as a wedding gift for Kelley and platinum for Dan, engraved with their wedding date. 

For the autumn wedding, the bride chose a bohemian theme, starting with her flowy, Grecian-style dress paired with rose gold Toms. She added sleeves to make it all her own and added fur when the sun went down. Amanda Lankford of Amanda Jewel Floral and Design created a custom flower crown and flower garter to wear instead of the traditional veil and lace garter. She carried a bouquet that included rosemary, red peonies, wheat, pheasant feathers and sword ferns. Hair and makeup were also simple, but she used Bobbi Brown cranberry lipstick for a pop of color. The groom chose his favorite color, blue, for his suit, a Calvin Klein from Men’s Wearhouse. A vintage wool tie from J.Crew in a cranberry polka-dot pattern tied it all together. The seven groomsmen wore the same suits as the groom, but with plaid ties from the Tie Bar. Boutonnieres featured herbs and pheasant feathers. The seven bridesmaids wore Jenny Yoo dresses from Kelly’s Closet, where the bride also purchased her gown. It was important to her that they be comfortable and that the dresses look good on everyone, especially her friend who was eight months' pregnant on the wedding day. The ladies wore neutral tones in the Annabelle dress, which can be tied 12 different ways. All wore the same shade of cranberry lipstick as the bride and carried similar bouquets, but with added yellows, blues and oranges. The flower girl, a friend’s daughter named Harper, dressed similarly to the bride in a bohemian, champagne-colored dress from Etsy with a flower crown. The ring bearer, a friend’s son named Grady, wore navy with suspenders and a hat and rang a bell down the aisle. Kelley’s uncle officiated the wedding and her godmother read a Bible verse that has been read at all her family’s weddings. Since Kelley works in the industry, she did much of the brainstorming on her own. Amanda Lankford also brought Kelley’s look to life when it came to extra details like the “his and hers” chairs.  Amanda Jewel did both floral and design and month-of coordination for us to make our wedding day perfect! Amanda’s team was truly amazing, and I completely trusted her with my specific and different design and entire wedding approach,” Kelley says. Tablescapes and decor included lanterns, vintage books, and deer antlers. Kelley wanted their wedding to be unique to them as a couple and not necessarily follow trends. 

Fall in Georgia served as their inspiration, so much of the floral details featured herbs and natural greenery, and the deep cranberry color was found throughout the decor. The oak tree they were married under also served as inspiration, so an image of an oak was featured on their wedding invitations, which were designed by the bride’s friend Elizabeth Schorr, a graphic designer. The bride created the programs, escort cards and menu cards on her own, featuring the couple’s favorite quotes and songs. Music is important to the couple, who brought in Valerie Wood to play the ceremony and cocktail hour after seeing her play in North Carolina. The festivities moved under the cover of tents for the reception, where the couple danced their first dance to the Lumineers' version of “This Must Be the Place” by the Talking Heads. The bride’s sister, a performer in "Wicked," performed the song as a friend played acoustic guitar. As the night went on, Sweetwater Junction played tunes from the Allman Brothers, Otis Redding and Widespread Panic. In between songs, guests dined on salmon, short ribs and fall-inspired dishes. In addition to the devil’s food cake wedding cake, created by the pastry chef at Bold American Events, the dessert bar featured macarons, peanut butter cups and candy apples. The signature drink of the evening was Papa’s Old-Fashioneds, a nod to the couple’s grandfathers, who had passed away. Guests were given jars of cherry jam and red pepper relish, made by the bride's father. The couple exited to sparklers but soon returned to enjoy the bonfire with their loved ones. —Caroline Eubanks
