A Casual, DIY Wedding at Oakland Nature Friends in Oakland, California

Sarah Kenny (28 and a project manager) and Kevin Dawson (27 and an IT engineer) met after graduating high school while they worked at Peet’s Coffee and Tea in Oakhurst, California. After maintaining a friendship for over a year, Sarah and Kevin went on their first date and never looked back. Almost eight years later, the couple took a trip to Carmel Valley and was walking through the woods when Kevin proposed. They had their natural wedding in the hills at Oakland Nature Friends in Oakland, California where they were surrounded by oak trees and a view of the bay area. The patio ceremony and lodge reception were decorated in a color palette of green, fuchsia, orange and yellow. Many DIY elements made up the wedding details, from the invitation stationery to the bridal bouquet and table arrangements. Since Sarah and Kevin both shared a love for ice cream, they decided to opt for an ice cream sandwich cart in lieu of a wedding cake. “We wanted our guests to focus on connecting with us and with each other, so we didn't participate in many of the wedding traditions,” says Sarah. “We didn't cut a cake, I didn't toss a bouquet, and our ceremony was very sweet and beautiful, but intentionally short. I think our strategy worked perfectly.”
