A Classic Contemporary Wedding at Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, Rhode Island

For their late spring wedding, Lisa Isaacs (29 and works in marketing) and Michael Iannucci (29 and an engineer) planned an elegant soiree at the stately Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, Rhode Island. Drawing on the refined feel of the setting, the couple opted for a classic, timeless aesthetic with a color palette of ivory, gold and navy, and a few contemporary touches.

The pair took full advantage of the expansive property, hosting each portion of the day in a different location to create a sense of structure and to give each event a distinct feel. The ceremony unfolded in the North Garden, where Lisa and Michael’s close friend officiated. “There were more ‘Star Wars’ references than I was anticipating — but I guess it goes with the territory of marrying an engineer,” says Lisa.

Cocktail hour immediately followed on the lawn with passed hors d’oeuvres and signature sips tantalizing guests’ taste buds, then everyone headed to an open-air tent overlooking the water for the reception. “We laughed through the toasts as the sun set over the water and guests danced the night away,” says Lisa. “Highlights included an anniversary dance, where my great aunt and uncle celebrated 57 years of marriage and a dance-off to ‘Thriller’ between Mike and my brother-in-law.”

Sophistication steered the decor, with crisp white table linens giving way to gilded dinnerware, clusters of floating candles and arrangements of ivory blooms. Jordan Almonds, an Italian tradition, were placed at each guest’s seat and strands of bistro lights twinkled high above, casting a romantic glow over the space.

While the day largely went off without a hitch, there Michael faced one small hiccup on the way to the ceremony. “Mike’s broke down on the way to the event, but he was able to catch a ride with strangers!” says Lisa. “Two nice women who were on their way to an ice cream social offered to give him a lift.” Case in point: Don’t sweat the small stuff.
