A Colorful Indian Wedding at Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Maryland

Sheila Kumar (34 and a doctor) and Russ Davis (34 and a lawyer) decorated with sunny florals and served up an East-meets-West meal that honored both their backgrounds. Embracing Sheila’s Indian heritage, the couple infused their short-but-sweet Hindu ceremony with rituals like chenda melam drumming and draping the aisle and mandap with marigold garlands. “Russ and I wanted to merge our cultures, as well as our own tastes, so we incorporated elements that were important to each of us,” Sheila says. “We both got what we wanted.” For the ceremony, Sheila wore a traditional white-and-gold sari from her family’s hometown in Kerala, India. During the reception, guests enjoyed a mix of traditional Indian dishes like chicken vindaloo and eggplant curry, along with Western dishes including mustard-glazed salmon and tomato and mint salad. “The food was amazing—it was one of my favorite parts of the wedding,” Sheila says. “I ate so much naan!” Late-night snacks included mac and cheese lollipops alongside chicken and waffle sliders.
