High school sweethearts Shirley Yao (26 and a genetic counselor) and Aaron Bedell (26 and a chemistry graduate student) first met in middle school before they began dating during their senior year. The proposal came in 2012 when Aaron popped the question outside of his childhood home on the night of the super moon. "It's been such a wonderful adventure so far navigating college, graduate school and our first jobs together," Shirley says. "The spot he chose was the location of so many past goodbyes, since we'd been dating long distance for two years at that point. Within a few minutes, though, he had turned all of those difficult memories into something truly amazing." The New Jersey-based couple chose the Planterra Conservatory in West Bloomfield as both their ceremony and reception venue due to its lush, green details. "We wanted to have the feel of an outdoor wedding with lots of natural lighting without having to deal with the temperamental Michigan fall weather," Shirley says. "The moment we stepped foot on the grounds, we knew it was the perfect match." Simple, garden-inspired details like willow branch centerpieces and plum-colored blooms helped to create a romantic, flower-filled space for the couple's 100 guests. "We wanted our wedding to not just be a celebration of our union, but a celebration of our family and friends as well," Shirley says. "We've been so blessed to be surrounded by these amazing people and wanted to honor their part in our lives while we committed to each other's."
