A Gatsby-Inspired Wedding at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Michelle Gutierrez (25 and a registered nurse) and Saul Gutierrez (23 and a multilingual customer service representative) met through mutual friends and were often at the same parties and get-togethers, but they never got to know each other. They reconnected years later at a friend’s party where Saul was the DJ; once Michelle asked Saul out to dance, the rest was history. Saul planned a proposal for Michelle at the French creperie where they went on their first official date, Chez Elle in Kansas City, Missouri. Their wedding was in Tulsa, Oklahoma: The ceremony took place at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, followed by a reception at the historic Mayo Hotel which offered a crystal ballroom with a panoramic view of downtown Tulsa and the river. “I wanted the venue to have a vintage feel since our theme was ‘The Great Gatsby’ and 1920s vintage-chic,” says Michelle. To accomplish the style, the color palette was black, silver, gold and beige, inspired by the opulence of the 1920s. Michelle and Saul danced to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You,” followed by line dancing and a conga line to get the party started. Their friend and DJ, Jose Matute, kept guests on their feet until the after party on the hotel terrace with a nighttime view of downtown Tulsa.
