A Glam, Book-Inspired Wedding at Housing Works Bookstore in New York, New York

Kendra Mathias (35 and a finance manager) and Monte Nelson (39 and a quality director) planned a glam, fun-filled affair with a palette of blush and mint and book-inspired touches. “I knew early on that I wanted something different and very intimate,” Kendra says. “Getting married in New York City was important and the venue had to represent us.” Since Kendra and Monte are avid readers, the Housing Works bookstore was the perfect fit. In shop provided a bookish backdrop for the evening, and part of the rental fee went to supporting Housing Works’s mission. “Dark wood, stacks of books and supporting a great cause—we were sold,” Kendra says. The evening started with a simple ceremony, after which the couple and their guests enjoyed signature sips, inspired eats and live music performed by Peace Industry Music Group, before Bigger Than Life DJ packed the dance floor with his mix of '80s, '90s and R & B classics. Shimmery rose gold sequined table runners and gold accents infused the literary space with a little glitz, while flickering votive candles and bistro lights cast a warm, ambient glow over the room. Drawing on the venue for inspiration, Kendra used letters of the alphabet as the table numbers, and guests wrote their well-wishes for the newlyweds on the pages of a vintage book. “Our invitations were even made with upcycled book covers,” Kendra says. “Each invitation was from a different book, making the interior of each invitation completely unique.” A tip from Kendra: “I wish I would have known not to be afraid to be myself earlier on in the process. I wasted a bit of time planning what I thought my wedding should be versus what actually represented us. I wish I had been unapologetic and unafraid earlier in the process. But I am glad I got to that point rather quickly.”
