For Bri Byram (32 and a hairstylist) and Heather Kolnick (24 and a data analyst) the word “community” inspired their eclectic celebration. “We didn’t want to feel limited by patriarchal traditions or a defined theme or color scheme,” Bri says. They involved as many loved ones as possible, assigning their daughter as the flower girl and tapping Bri’s cousin to officiate their semi-Jewish ceremony in the heart of Camp Tanadoona. Heather designed the paper goods, and Bri’s grandma made a three-tier raspberry and white chocolate cake. Bri (wore a dress from a consignment shop and a flower crown made by her bridesmaid. Heather paired hot pink paisley socks with her three-piece suit. Guests sipped cocktails in reusable cups bearing one of Heather’s illustrations (they doubled as favors), then sat for a hotdish dinner at tables set with compostable products—palm leaf plates and birch flatware. Heather used a transfer marker to copy names onto luggage tag escort cards. Guests stayed overnight in cabins and tents after snacking on roasted marshmallows.
