Kalya Paradis (30 and an occupational therapist) met Mike Shahindoust (31 and a mechanical engineer) in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, so it was fitting for the couple to hold their wedding among the natural beauty of the park’s AIDS Memorial Grove. Their modern Persian-Jewish garden wedding for 110 guests incorporated elements from both of their backgrounds. “We had a chuppah for the Jewish ceremony and a sofreh aghd table with symbolic Persian items on it,” Kalya says. The blue and pink cocktail hour took place at the aquarium at the nearby California Academy of Sciences. “We chose a spectrum of ocean blues that we thought would work with the aquarium environment,” Kalya says. At the reception, vibrant pink flower centerpieces and succulents brightened up the deep turquoise tablecloths. “Neither of us had imagined a large, traditional wedding, but our families wanted that, so we figured we should make it a really groovy party for everyone.” —Carolyn Meers

As Kalya prepped for her wedding day, Mike sent her a heart-shaped scene of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The invitations were simple, tiny booklets with covers made of thin, lightweight wood.
"I let the bridesmaids choose their own dresses after giving them a color scheme," Kalya says. Each bridesmaid opted for a different hue of blue.
Florist Alicia Kay created the garden-fresh bouquet with succulents and bright pink and fuchsia flowers.

Simple glass bottle vases held arrangements of blue blossoms.
"I was torn between a poofy or tapered look, but in the end the dress was very princessy," Kalya says. "I felt like a little cupcake! I felt great, and I figured I wouldn’t wear anything like it again."
"We had a cocktail hour in the aquarium! That was what we were most excited for about the museum," says Kalya, who opted for pink lemonade with blue straws.
