A Modern Wedding at Willow in St. Louis, Missouri
Annie Purcell (36, and an actress) and Michael Salinas, (34 and an actor) met while Annie was performing in a play at the Denver Center Theatre. The theatrical pair planned an entertaining fete filled with live music, jewel-tone details and verdant garlands. The couple decided early on that they would wed in the bride’s hometown of St. Louis at a new downtown venue. But while the setting was decidedly modern, the nuptials were steeped in family tradition. Annie said “I do” in her mother’s timeless, ivory silk satin gown. “I was lucky enough to wear her dress, just as my sister did,” she says.
Modern design elements like lofted ceilings and concrete floors appealed to Annie and Michael, who celebrated under white chandeliers made of willow branches. Vibrant blooms and lush greenery stood out against the stark-white room, giving the brand-new venue a warm, inviting feel. “The flowers were stunning,” Annie says. “I burst into tears when I saw my bouquet.”
“The music was incredibly important to us,” Annie says. The sentimental ceremony featured a church choir and cultural hymns, while a live band kept the dance party going well after dinner. As a nod to the groom’s New Orleans upbringing, a second line led partygoers from the cocktail hour to the reception space.
Annie sketched a custom illustration of her and Michael that appeared throughout both the stationery and signage.
