A Romantic Outdoor Wedding at William Aiken House in Charleston, South Carolina

It was fitting that New Yorkers Birkley Kuykendall (30 and a nanny) and Joshua Stark (36 and a commercial real estate broker) planned a destination wedding at William Aiken House in Charleston, South Carolina, since had Josh popped the question while the two were on a plane to Charleston for Valentine’s Day just nine months earlier. “Thirty minutes after takeoff, he popped the question on the plane,” Birkley says of the surprise proposal. “I chose this venue as a little girl. I love the charm and history right in the middle of downtown. In college, I made a point of driving by it every day.” The couple brought their alfresco affair to life with romantic shades of pinks and greens, beautiful lace and fresh blooms. They said “I do” on the venue’s terrace with Birkley's best friend’s father officiating and her boss (who introduced the couple) reading verses. Her boss and his children stood alongside the couple as they exchanged vows. “If not for them, none of this would have happened,” Birkley says. The couple danced as husband and wife to “Die a Happy Man” by Eric Church, and then the dance party got started. “The band was probably the most reflective of us as a couple,” Birkley says of Emerald Empire Band. “Everyone was on the dance floor until the last minute, and at one point we were even dancing on stage—exactly how we envisioned our wedding.” —Marissa Hermanson
