Shaylyn Masse  (26 and a stay-at-home mom) and Ryan Maran (29 and an accountant) could think of no better place than their beautiful home state of Maine to gather their family and friends to celebrate their nuptials. The couple planned an intimate affair at Clay Hill Farm in York, Maine, that was both romantic and personal. Tucked away on a winding road in the seaside town, Clay Hill Farm boasts beautiful grounds complete with natural trails, a bird sanctuary and a rustic red barn that provided an idyllic backdrop for the couple’s ceremony. Shaylyn and Ryan selected a soft blush pink, blue and ivory palette for the day that would create an undeniably romantic ambiance without overwhelming the beauty of the natural setting. York Flower Shop created lush arrangements of cabbage roses, peonies and Queen Anne’s lace in soft shades of pink, peach and white to bring Clay Hill’s gardens and dining room to life. For the ceremony, the couple had a ring box custom-designed in the shape of a truck for their three-year-old son to carry down the aisle. “We wanted to personalize something for him to make him feel really special as well,” Shaylyn says. “We ended up finding an Etsy vendor who creates ring bearer pillows that are little handmade wooden pickup trucks. He absolutely loved it and carried it with him all day.” Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests moved inside for a night of dinner and dancing. There, Shaylyn and Ryan incorporated touches like handcrafted state-map table names, representing their love of travel, and a brunch-inspired cocktail hour to give the reception a personal dimension. After a fun-filled evening, the pair sent guests home with jars of jam from Stonewall Kitchen, a local favorite.

For the reception, the newlyweds and their guests moved inside to Clay Hill Farm’s restaurant for a night of dinner and dancing. York Flower Shop infused the space with ambient, romantic charm using lush, cascading arrangements of cabbage roses, hydrangeas, Queen Anne’s lace and peonies in soft shades of peach, pink and white.
Taking full advantage of Clay Hill Farm’s lush, natural setting, Shaylyn and Ryan hosted their ceremony outdoors, exchanging vows under a quaint gazebo draped in romantic garden rose garlands. Including their 3-year-old son, Oliver, in the day’s festivities was important to the pair and the role of ring bearer was the perfect fit. “He was so excited for the wedding and has been calling it ‘our wedding’ for the last six months,” Shaylyn says. As an extra-special touch, the couple found an Etsy vendor to create a special wooden pickup truck “ring pillow” for him to carry down the aisle, complete with a burlap pillow in the back and the couple’s initials and wedding date. “He absolutely loved it and carried it with him all day,” Shaylyn says.
Garden Gazebo at Clay Hill Farm
Having grown up in the quaint town of York on Maine’s striking southern coast, Shaylyn and Ryan knew that their hometown was the perfect place to say their “I dos.” Clay Hill Farm in Cape Neddick, Maine, provided an idyllic setting for the intimate gathering with its beautiful grounds, nature trails, bird sanctuary and rustic red barn.
When choosing a dress for her bridesmaids, Shaylyn made a point of finding a dress that would fit the formality of the wedding while offering the women plenty of re-wear potential. A short sheath style by Adrianna Papell offered just that; the classic silhouette made the dress appropriate for any dressy occasion and the lace overlay and pale pink hue reflected the wedding’s romantic vibe.
Ryan went for a traditional look when it came to his wedding day attire. He donned a classic black tuxedo and waistcoat with a matching black tie. For his groomsmen, he went for a slightly more casual, though no less polished ensemble, having the guys don gray trousers, matching waistcoats, navy ties and crisp button-down shirts.
Shaylyn worked with York Flower Shop to create a romantic, spring-inspired bouquet that matched the tone of the elegant spring affair. Cabbage roses, Shaylyn’s favorite, in a soft shade of coral, pink roses, peonies and bright green ferns filled her bouquet and added a fresh pop of color to her ladylike lace gown.
After a brunch-inspired cocktail hour and sit-down dinner, the newlyweds treated their guests to a decadent chocolate chunk and pink champagne cake with strawberry filling. Hippie Chick Bakery gave the three-tier confection a textured, ombre appearance with pink and white buttercream frosting, adding pink and peach cabbage roses to give the cake a romantic edge.
Whimsical, Rustic Wedding Invitations
“For our favors we wanted to give the guests something practical that they would enjoy using when they got home,” Shaylyn says. The couple selected a variety of locally made jams from York-based Stonewall Kitchen, a coastal-area favorite, for guests to take home.
Shaylyn’s bridal look was all about classic romance. She spotted her trumpet-style Allure Bridals dress at Vows in Watertown, Massachusetts, and was instantly taken by the gown’s delicate Alencon lace overlay, illusion neckline and elegant pearl accents along the neck and shoulder hems. “It was a sample cut, and never went into production for the masses, so it is one-of-a-kind, which I loved,” Shaylyn says.
Infusing the day with personality was important to Shaylyn and Ryan, so the couple looked to their love of travel to add to the decor. “We've taken many road trips through the US together, and Ryan can spend hours looking at atlases and travel books dreaming up adventures for us to take,” Shaylyn says. “So instead of doing the traditional table numbers, we labeled each of our 15 tables with a state we have traveled to together within the US.” The couple used Ryan’s atlases to cut out the silhouette of each state and mounted them on pale pink or gray card stock. They then hand-stamped each state with their corresponding abbreviation.
