A Rustic Backyard Wedding at a Private Residence in Hillsborough, New Hampshire

Liz Robertson (30 and a director of people operations) and Boris Maguire (30 and a head of deployment) call Kenya home, but they headed to New England—where they both grew up—to say “I do.” When their first venue fell through, Boris’s parents saved the day, opening their quaint New Hampshire home to the couple’s 300 guests. The resulting soiree was a fun-filled backyard fete steeped in Northeastern charm, vibrant color and rustic flair. The day unfolded with an outdoor ceremony on the lawn, with Liz and Boris exchanging vows under a white birch wedding arch draped in ethereal white fabric. A close friend officiated, adding an extra-personal touch to the proceedings, and Liz’s college a cappella group performed a rendition of Echosmith’s “Bright.” Bundles of bright wildflowers, displayed atop tree-trunk slices, paid tribute to the natural setting while adding a pop of fresh, cheerful color. With the help of the pros at Private Weddings and Events, the couple transformed the backyard into a whimsical woodland ballroom, complete with wooden farm tables, wildflower centerpieces and romantic lace accents. Canoes filled with ice and local brews invited guests to whet their whistles, while cozy vignettes provided the perfect place for friends and family to kick back. Lawn games such as cornhole and life-size Jenga offered endless entertainment, and Liz and her father surprised guests with a choreographed dance. “He spent hours at a dance studio learning moves and practicing really hard," Liz says. "It was an absolute blast!” A tip from Liz: “It’s a big day, but it’s still a party—do this one like you would any other but with a little extra oomph. Just enjoy it. No one remembers any of the details you stress about anyway.” —Libby MacCarthy
