A Rustic Barn Wedding at VanDamme Family Farm in Rock, Michigan
Not long after Kayla VanDamme (30 and works in sales and marketing) and Andrew Herron (30 and works in supply chains) had started dating after being introduced by mutual friends, they realized their paths had already crossed in a completely unexpected way. On the way home from a Detroit Red Wings game, the couple noticed a car in front of them with a vanity plate, which spurred a conversation about Andrew's dislike for them. Kayla confessed that she had one on the car she had been driving just before they started dating that read "VW FUN." Andrew was dumbfounded and proceeded to explain that he remembered seeing Kayla's car in front of him at a stoplight in Ann Arbor and thought the license plate was completely ridiculous. "He could even tell me the intersection where this happened," says Kayla. "I immediately had this flashback to that intersection and where I was headed. Stopped at the red light I was thinking how the guy in the car behind me was cute, but that someone needed to rip the spoiler off the back of the car!" For their wedding, the couple opted for a laid-back affair at the VanDamme Family Farm. "I can't think of a more meaningful location!" says Kayla. "It allowed us to escape the rules of a traditional venue and make our own; all while making our day everything that we wanted." Kayla and Andrew opted for understated, rustic decor with woodsy, vintage twist, relying on moss, wildflowers, thistle and antique touches to bring their vision to life. The farm's acres of perfectly tended pastures and barns created the perfect backdrop for the occasion. A casual atmosphere, lots of lawn games, a live band and a bon fire with s'mores were fun details that ensured guests enjoyed the evening.
