After Jessica Coen (33 and an editor at large for Jezebel) and Benjamin Bochnowski (33 and President of People's United Bank) settled on Ann Arbor's Misty Farm, the couple quickly hired Alison and Bryan from VLD events. "We weren't just looking for planners -- though we certainly needed that, seeing as we were planning the wedding from New York and Chicago," Jessica explains. "We also wanted someone with real design experience who could articulate our vision: a sophisticated, contemporary vibe in a rustic setting."But while style and design were two important elements in their vision, planning an out-of-state wedding proved to be difficult. "We had to bring in outside vendors for absolutely everything; the level of coordination was dizzying," Jessica says. "But our planners were with us every step of the way and we loved their attentive, thoughtful approach -- they truly understood our personalities and style. They guided us through the millions of choices we had to make, kept us organized and cal and handled every last detail on the day itself." The result was a rustic wedding that was sophisticated, yet upbeat. "The ceremony reflected how we felt about getting married: sincere and thoughtful, but also upbeat and lighthearted," Jessica says. "This was an important day to us, but we were also looking forward to having fun."

With the ceremony taking place on the grass, the bride immediately vetoed white shoes. "They would have been destroyed within minutes," Jessica explains. "My 'something blue' was my shoes. The Nina heels were genuinely the most comfortable of any I tried on; I wore them for almost 12 hours straight without any pain."

To balance out the drama of the dress, Jessica kept her jewelry simple with a single pearl necklace from Cerulean Plume, a barely-there bracelet by Verse Jewelry and oversized stud earrings with just a hint of sparkle.
First Look
"I wanted a classic shape with modern details and a subtle 'wow' factor," Jessica says of her Vera Wang dress. "I went with Vera Wang's Jane, a mermaid gown in stretch crepe with chiffon gathers and a ruffled train -- it was minimalist in the front, drama in the back. I had the asymmetrical strap removed for a more streamlined look and added a slight dip in the back to make it more flattering."

Programs were handed out as guests were seated, while escort cards were placed on sticks and put into potted succulents that ultimately doubled as wedding favors.

The custom save the dates and invitations were proof that not all design elements have to be matchy-matchy. "They didn't exactly match our color scheme, but we liked the rich yellow color for a fall wedding," Jessica explains.

"Top to bottom, our wedding was what it was because of VLD.," Jessica says. "The design, the colors, the vibe, the ceremony, the party -- Alison and Bryan brought everything together for a gorgeous event that exceeded our wildest expectations. It was perfect. I think they even pulled some strings to make sure we had beautiful weather."
"Misty Farm was beautiful, could accommodate our numbers and we liked the idea of hosting a party in a setting our friends wouldn't normally expect from us," Jessica says. "We really lucked out -- the farm had a cancellation for the upcoming season and we jumped on it. The rest is history."
The Traveling Photo Booth
"If were were going to get married in Michigan, it had to be in Ann Arbor," Jessica explains. "It's where we met, and it happens to be such a cool town."
