A Vintage, DIY Wedding at Quincy Cellars Winery in Ripley, New York
Laura Krolczyk (35 and a works in government relations) and Christopher Szmania (29 and works in law enforcement) both come from Polish-American families, so it was no surprise that their paths crossed while they were volunteering at a Polish festival in Buffalo, New York. After a little more than a year of dating, Christopher proposed to Laura while strolling through Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, New York. Chris placed the engagement ring in Laura’s hand after she asked for a penny to toss into a fountain, luckily realizing what was in her hand before she cast it off. The pair planned their wedding at Quincy Cellars winery in Ripley, New York. Located in the heart of the largest and oldest Concord-grape region in the world, the winery boasts a 130-year-old barn and a striking natural setting dotted with willow trees and acres of lush green vineyards. “Within seconds of stepping onto the property, we turned to each other and said, ‘This is what we’ve been looking for,’ ” Laura says. Reflecting the history of Quincy Cellars and the Chautauqua County region in the wedding’s decor was key; it inspired the day’s subtle vintage theme. Fans of DIY projects, the couple made many of the decorative details themselves, with Laura handcrafting over 100 embroidery lace hoops to hang in the Quincy Cellars barn and Christopher finding and rehabbing frames and vintage milk-glass vases for the tables. Laura also made lace curtains for the ceremony, which was in the pavilion overlooking the vineyard, and each of the escort cards and table numbers were hand-punched by the couple to resemble lace edging. As a nod to their Polish heritage, they included a traditional presentation of bread and salt during the ceremony. After the couple said their “I dos,” they headed to the barn for a night of dinner and dancing. Guests were given locally made Concord grape jam and were treated to a decadent dinner of lobster and whiskey butter rib-eye, followed by an equally noteworthy dessert of cake, macarons, donuts and homemade cookies. After a night of celebrating and dancing, the couple made their exit under a canopy of brightly lit sparklers and a sky filled with festive fireworks.
