A Vintage, Nautical Wedding at The Sullivan House on Block Island, Rhode Island
Megan Doornweerd (26 and a teacher) and Keith Tunderman (27 and a Public Works employee) met in April 2007 in their college dorm at University of Connecticut studying for finals. While school brought them together, it was the annual family vacations in the summer to Block Island that drew Megan and Keith to their wedding venue, The Sullivan House. Megan and Keith knew they wanted to get married surrounded by the wonderful memories they had created with Megan's family. Because the wedding would be on an island near the water, Megan and Keith wanted a vintage, nautical theme for their big day. This theme inspired the color palette of navy, cream, and light gray with accents of soft pinks seen throughout the floral bouquets and centerpieces. Megan's trumpet silhouette lace dress was created by designer, Amy Kuschel. To coordinate with the color palette of navy, Megan asked her bridesmaids to choose their own dresses while the groomsmen dressed in light gray. Their stationary was created by AvantGarde Design and had a nautical anchor emblem custom made. The cocktail hour appetizers included a wild mushroom quiche, bacon wrapped scallops, beef teriyaki satay, and thai crab cakes to name a few while the reception served a choice of Cod with saffron sauce and roasted beets or Grilled Black Angus sirloin, sauteed wild forest mushrooms, watercress and creamy horseradish and chive puree by the staff of Block Island Gourmet. The Sullivan House sits on one of the highest points on the island which provided a magnificent overlook, along with a prime spot for beautiful sunsets. "The setting was almost surreal and although a wedding is all excitement, our guests also had the opportunity to explore the simple beauty that Block Island has to offer," says Megan.
